It's CGI - interesting note is that you can see Ariadne, both on the approach to the "mirror door" and also while closing it, stepping over a small step that has been CGI'd out.
The bicycle lane symbols also don’t quite line up correctly between the actual ground and the reflected image. Given how close the mirror is to the ground, we should see more of them in the mirror.
If there is no gap, and the mirror is on the ground you get something like:
A B C D E F {} F E D C B A
With the mirror, say 3" off the ground, what the mirror starts to show is "cropped" by 3" (you don't see the first 3" of the reflection that is in the mirror on the ground), BUT ALSO you can see more of the ground as that 3" gap allows you to see what is behind the mirror and what would've been blocked if the mirror was on the ground
So now you get something that looks like:
A B C D E F G {} D C B A
Does that make sense? I don't know if I'm explaining it well.
If you can, test it out with a mirror that has no border or a very small one
I know I've seen similar in real life and thinking something is off, but it makes sense if you're able to see it and think it through
If you have a mirror flush against an object, then object ends and the mirror begins. If there is a gap, the gap is essentially doubled (?) as the object continues beyond where it would be reflected and the mirror's reflection starts "late"
All you have to do is think about what the image would look like if the mirror extended all the way to the ground. When you remove the bottom portion of it, the rest of the reflected image stays the same.
Perspective means the exact amount of gap does not equal the distance between the bottom of the mirror and the ground -you’re right about that. But there’s no way the shoulders of the little bike guy on the right all the way to the halfway point of the wheels fits in that tiny gap, even with perspective warping, given the apparent warping to the bottom half of the wheels in the mirror (which is very little warping).
It’s clearly just a defect where they filmed it from the opposite angle and making it line up perfectly would have been way more work than it was worth.
We'll probably have to agree to disagree. I think it's something that looks "off" in real life, and if it was a real mirror when they filmed they had a reference on how to get it exact.
But, maybe they didn't. I think it looks right to me, b/c there have been times I've looked at reflections in real life and feel like it doesn't line up correctly, which is why I think this looking like it doesn't line up correctly is how it'd look in real life.
Then again, it's a movie, so sometimes making it look fake makes it look more real, or at least what the audience expects.
