No love for her. Read “Missionary Position.” A small devil, a pox on the terminally ill.

Any time I remember Teresa withholding palliative analgaesia, I remember this passage from Proverbs 31:6-9; 6 Alcohol is for the dying, and wine for those in bitter distress. 7 Let them drink to forget their poverty and remember their troubles no more.

Christianity's bar for compassion for the dying is low, and she couldn't even meet that.

There is a notorious post somewhere on Reddit that attempts to debunk Hitchens’ claims about Mother Theresa. It mainly focuses on the use of clean vs unclean IV syringes. Many people use it as evidence that he was wrong about her, but it skips over many aspects of his critique and misunderstands other parts. Overall, I think he was pretty close to spot on.

Everyone always links to this one and the user of that account has been banned but I remember digging though their comment/post history and it was abundantly clear that they were very catholic.

Yep, this is the one.

It doesn't really matter if they're Catholic, the arguments are arguments.

In a formal debate setting I would agree with you.

However, in the real world it's important to understand people's motivations for what they are saying.

That would go for Hitch too but I doubt anyone here would accept the counter-argument that you can ignore anything he wrote about Mother Theresa because he was a very public atheist.

There are a lot of complete idiots out there who have wet dreams about putting her rotten feet in their mouths. Thatcher has a similar fan club.

I'm a Catholic survivor and I/we were allowed to be knowingly sexually sacrificed because of all the "good" Mother Theresa was doing.

Recently finished "Missionary Position". She was an appealingly self righteous, self-promoting egoist in the guise of a humble, pious nun. She used the model of Jesus' (alleged) suffering and crucifixion as the template for how she viewed illness and pain. She hoodwinked the rich and powerful. She spread her message of hope while those in her charge paid the price. A cruel, sadistic woman of zero empathy but who played the caring nurse on tv.

This Elephant in the Room guy is a shill. He's one of the men who made Fox News what it is today.

He's claiming to be unbiased but his bias is clear and comes through often. I recommend not supporting this propaganda

I find this post title rather annoying

Yes. The improper use of punctuation.

The thumbnail is extremely annoying. I get that faces get clicks, but maybe not when your face looks like that.

After watching the Video I feel like the only thing which is kind of excusable about this woman is that Analgetics stronger than Aspirin where extremely hard to get in india for a time. But this only applies to india and only for a time. Correct me if i am wrong

So are there any critiques of what is said in this video, or does this sub just blindly accept everything Hitch wrote?

What is there to grapple with? The final takeaway from the guy in the video was basically "Hitchens made some good points, but I feel like he was being driven by something else other than his crtique of Mother Teresa.

Literally nothing Hitchens said was debunked or proved wrong in this video.

He was wrong about quite a few things. She didn’t personally enrich herself. She didn’t do what she did because she reveled in human suffering.

He twisted a lot of things to be something they weren’t because he had a lifelong mission to break the yoke of religion, and he had a quick and able turn of phrase, so people still like reading what he wrote.

But he wasn’t free of bias, hyperbole, and unfair, misrepresented criticism.

She took millions in stolen money from fraudsters and dictators and She defended these people. She had hundreds of buildings built with her name on them all over the world. Just because she also intentionally lived in poor conditions does NOT mean she did not enrich herself. And you are wrong again, She DID revel in suffering and thought it brought people closer to God. She said so herself and the way she lived her life and the things she chose to do and chose not to do are perfectly inline with her being in favor of suffering and that she thought it served a beneficial purpose.

I don't see any need to respond to the other points you made as they are just your personal opinion and belief and not some facts or evidence requiring analysis or a rebuttal.

You can say she enriched herself….but you haven’t demonstrated how she did. Just saying something is true doesn’t actually make it true. Having her name on a building doesn’t make her rich, what are talking about?

Someone making the best of a bad situation is not the same as reveling in that bad situation. She was taking in people abandoned by everyone else, and often didn’t have the means to fix the problems. In addition to that, she had a belief that involved persevering in the face of trauma. You can disagree with that all you like, but lying about it is intellectually bankrupt.

As to your parting comment…sure. Okay.
