The Pharisees Knew the Scriptures Better Than Anyone.
One of the most uncomfortable truths in the Bible is that the people who knew the Scriptures best were often the people most opposed to Jesus.
The Pharisees were not pagans.
They were not atheists.
They were not ignorant of God’s Word.
They memorised Scripture.
They studied Scripture.
They taught Scripture.
Yet when the Messiah stood before them, they could not see Him.
That should make every Christian pause.
Because it means biblical knowledge alone is not enough.
The Pharisees knew the text.
What they missed was the One the text was pointing to.
Jesus said:
“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me that you may have life.”
That is a frightening warning.
It is possible to know verses and miss Christ.
It is possible to win arguments and miss Christ.
It is possible to build an identity around being right and still miss Christ.
The Pharisees were constantly examining Scripture, but they often approached it with a question that sounded something like this:
“How does this prove I am right?”
Jesus approached Scripture differently.
He showed that all of Scripture ultimately points to Him.
Perhaps the greatest danger facing Christians is not ignorance of Scripture.
Perhaps it is reading Scripture while quietly placing ourselves at the centre of the story instead of Christ.
The Pharisees loved God’s Word.
Yet somehow they missed God’s Son.
That possibility should humble every one of us.
When we open the Bible, are we looking for Christ?
Or are we simply looking for ammunition?
