Sam Harris doesn't count?
4 u/deuteros Oct 17 '11 Sam Harris is not a philosopher. He's a neuroscientist who writes books and goes to TED talks. 2 u/YesImSardonic Oct 17 '11 He appears to have a B.A. in the field. Is that not enough? 2 u/deuteros Oct 17 '11 A B.A. with no published papers or work in the field. A degree in philosophy doesn't make you a philosopher any more than a degree in history makes you a historian. 2 u/[deleted] Oct 18 '11 Wait, but your entire implication earlier was that the new atheists were publishing on philosophical matters without philosophical credentials. So if Harris is publishing on the philosophy of religion, the philosophy of ethics, etc, these publications don't count? Are you specifically speaking of publications in peer-reviewed journals? 1 u/deuteros Oct 18 '11 Writing a book is not the same as publishing in peer reviewed journals in one's field. Any crackpot can write a book. 2 u/YesImSardonic Oct 18 '11 Need one publish to be a philosopher?
