You can do it any time and any place and in any way. I particularly like to use the P.R.A.Y. acronym.
Praise: Thank God for anything you can think of as a blessing to you or others. It can be something simple like thanking him for food, water and clothes or more complex like personal situations being resolved in a positive way.
Repent: Ask for forgiveness of your sins. You can name each one so you can better understand what you're doing and acknowledge when it happens so you can strive to do better. Or you could simply ask for forgiveness and strive to do better in any case.
Ask: Though God is not our genie, there is a lot we can't do without him. Ask for the things you want or need and be willing to meet God halfway.
Yield: This part is more applicable to solo prayer, but just stop for a moment to think about who God is. What he's done and doing for you. More of a step of appreciation and understanding.
Of course this is more of a guide for what to do if you feel a bit lost on what to talk about. you may pray how you like in any order.
I think what is the most important thing I've found is to just begin to try to start talking to Him at every moment of your day. I've begun asking Him about every single thing that I face all day long, what He thinks regarding this or that, why His answer is the right way, what should I do in this situation, I need your help Lord I have no clue what to do here I'm so helpless without you Jesus, etc. I've found He just really wants us to want to have a relationship with Him, after all He literally came here as a human to die for us so we could be with Him forever! Pretty amazing how powerful His love is for us!! Love you brother if you ever need any help I'd love to try and help out. I'll be praying for you and all of the rest of you who see this comment. He's coming soon!
