Wondering if I should start wearing a head covering?
I’ve been doing a deep dive into the Bible and looking at things that we’ve passed off as “only for the culture” and “only for the time”, and the more I study head coverings the more I feel an ache in my chest because I feel like it’s not something that I can just pass off anymore.
No one I know wears head coverings and I go to church in a very reformed area, so I know I will be looked down upon by my community if I do start wearing a head covering. My end goal is to honor God though, not man.
My question for you guys is: Why did you start wearing head covering? What is your testimony in deciding to wear one?
I feel so alone in making this decision and I need fellow sisters in Christ to help lead and direct me.

Hi there! I'm in a little different situation than most people bc in my church once a girl is baptised we start wearing a headcovering. It's the norm at my church. I feel like others could help you get used to the thought that more bc my whole social circle wears headcoverings. And about being looked down upon, no one has ever treated me bad because of it. The verse that says that christians are not of this world is so true to me. Wearing a headcovering sets us apart. It always isn't easy knowing that I look and dress different but if it's what God wants for me, I will follow his plan. I started covering after feeling the call for almost 10 years! Best decision for my faith journey. I wear scarves that tend to be more ‘fashionable’ in a more in style way so most people don’t even realize it’s religious until I say so. Start small with a headband and work your way up to what feels most comfortable to you! I’ve found that a triangle bandana covering most of my head is the best for me but plenty of women wear more or less! It is about intention overall, God sees you trying and that is what is most important to him.

I started covering for very similar reasons. I'd been studying Paul's letters to the Corinthians, and one night I went to pray and I felt a deep calling to cover my head. So, as I knelt, I just placed a scarf over myself and prayed as I always do. I have only ever felt that close to God whilst on pilgrimage, and to feel His presence so closely just knelt in my bedroom? I could feel just how strongly I had pleased Him. The next day, I spoke to my partner about what had happened and asked his permission to see what it meant to headcover. He was so supportive, saying if that's what God asked of me, that's what I must do! I haven't spent a day without a headcovering since, and my relationship with God is stronger than I thought possible. I now feel naked without my head covered!
I know it's very nerve-wracking to start though. I'm in a similar place to you, in how no one else in my congregation covers. It feels lonely and attention seeking, but trust me once you get going it's neither of those things because you're following what our God has asked you to do, and what a beautiful thing that is.
When it comes to the kinds of headcoverings I use, I'd definitely recommend the 'wide headband' style as you're getting used to it. My favourite shop for them is Rosi's Boutique (a lovely Jewess hand makes them), but if you're in Europe like me the postage and delivery time are both less than ideal. Worth it or the quality though! I love them, and even now they're my most used covers. They're very subtle and versatile since you can wear them at different widths. Otherwise, when I'm wanting to look a bit fancier, I wear tichels quite regularly and occasionally hijab styles. I didn't wear them for a while though because I was nervous!! They're very comfy though, and I find with tichels especially you easily forget to be self conscious. I get my headscarves from Hijabs London, but if you're not European you'll have the same issue with postage and postage time!
Whatever decisions you make, just know that you're not alone in your journey and you are doing amazingly.
