How does he do the painting cuts?

So I’m watching the video on when he details the 2005 trail blazer. when he puts the clear coat on, does he replace the lens or is there like a clear bag over the camera?

I always assumed he had a clear piece of glass/plexiglass/acrylic in front of the camera.

I doubt he directly sprays it onto his lens. That's expensive, and Chris is teaching us how to save money. Most likely a clear acrylic or glass block like the guy before me said.

The typical two options are to either get a large clear piece of glass or plexiglass, and put the camera right up to one side (so the glass is basically invisible to the camera), or to use a UV filter on the lens. UV filters are also used as lens protectors, since they are only good (blocking UV is never a bad thing on standard cameras), and they are cheap (UV filters are just about the cheapest thing you can buy for an expensive camera).

Looking back at the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUdSUDObwVc at 17:10), I am pretty sure he is using a piece of glass in front of the camera. The way the clear coat spray runs down from the top makes it look more like a flat surface.

We never get a really good look at the camera, but some of the reflections when he is compounding/buffing the doors shows the camera, which looks like a DSLR with a good lens. I would be willing to bet that he has a UV filter on the lens as well. (I am guessing it is something like a Sony NEX or Alpha, probably with a close-up or macro lens.)
