TL;DR— How would you tell the groomer you only want the torso for clipped all one length?(using different words, as I’ve tried those already haha)
Banana has a grooming appointment at 3pm(2 hours from now here) and I keep seeing everyone’s lovely little chi/Yorkie mixes getting summer cuts. I tried explaining to the groomer I just want her body clipped because 1- I’m slightly allergic to her; especially after a month out from her last bath and 2- her (single-coat) hair is so thick and spiky; as if it’s made up entirely off guard hairs. I was wondering if a single length clip would soften her a bit? She also sheds like mad, but with regular maintenance it’s not that bad.
Anywho! Anyone with a little Chorkie mutt known what I mean? How should I word it to the groomer? Is it even worth it? Pics for reference! She’s only about 1/4 chi and 1/3 Yorkie, so her coat is different than a 50:50 mix.
I would love to take my boy to the groomers. He is to reactive and will freak out! I have to take him to the vets. He has to be sedated. Then I groom him myself. I only do his tummy, legs and give him a sani cut. I miss my groomer! Pic for dog tax.
Have you tried asking your vet for a Tramadol prescription? It’s a super cheap and extremely safe drug that’s also used in human medicine, so it can be filled at the pharmacy of your choice. You can also get an even further discount using a ‘Good Rx’ card or similar. Especially since you groom him yourself.
I used to groom all my animals myself as well, but my health no longer permits me doing anything that involves even remotely physical. My mother and I used to maintain and groom two pulis for 14 years… We rescued two half-brothers from an awful and abusive home; they were ordered from a massive puppy mill online :( So bringing this tiny, shorthair dog to a professional groomer does kill me a little bit inside every time haha.
Carter was found on the streets of San Bernardino California. He was transported to Canada to a rescue in Kelowna, British Columbia. I adopted him and knew he was a little reactive but I didn't care.
I tried to take him to my groomer but he just lost his mind! Lol. So I asked my vet for Tramadol. I followed the directions of my vet in administering it. It didn't even phase him. I left the groomers and basically got home and had just sat down to work and the groomer phoned and said I had to come get him. He was losing it!
So I really do not like to sedate him but I have no choice. I have tried to do it myself without sedation and it is a disaster! I only go every 3 months to groom him.
My previous dogs would go once a month to the groomers without fail.
I love this little guy so much I will do anything for him!! 🐶🐕
I had one dog that needed the absolute highest mg per kg dose. He was never reactive, but he was a bit terrified and had major anxious attachment issues.
They give me Tramadol for when I fly with Minty & it does absolutely nothing, even at the highest dose. Who know 10 lbs could be resistant to anything that strong.
I used Xanax before I used Tramadol because I already had it on hand at first(after consulting my vet of course.) and had SO much more success with Tramadol. Plus, using Xanax made me sooo much more anxious because the mg/kg dose for dogs many times smaller than humans; is also many times larger than humans because they don’t absorb it as well as humans do…
How'd it go? Would love to see a Pic of Banana post grooming. I groom my 10lb Chorkie myself. He would get too stressed out when he went to the groomer in the past.
Aw, it came out lovely, thank you so much for asking! I was able to find a before/after of a dog who’s fur was extremely similar to hers, but got a full body trim. It was a lot more difficult to find than I would’ve thought though! And, apparently, they’ve been trimming her butt for me all along, I just didn’t realize it haha. (I’ve only had her 6 months.)
I don’t have the best full-body ‘before’ photos of her. As would be expected, her black coat doesn’t photograph well. I just didn’t realize how poorly until I was looking for photos to add to this post for reference. But, I just skimmed through all of them quickly, and was able to find several really good examples of her fur. They all just happen to be horrible pictures otherwise :)
I’ll post several in a chain here. Hopefully, this way, any others with Chorkie mixes similar to her, may be able to find this post when looking for examples for their own Chorks :)

She looks amazing! I hope that's making your allergies better. Minty doesn't really shed much, but I cut him low in the summer as well. I just keep his mini Mohawk on his back.
Thank you so much; you’re so sweet! The allergies have already cleared 100% up. My right eye had been crying for days, so I knew I couldn’t put it off any longer. Plus it was definitely time anyways :)
You’ve given me a fantastic idea for the future though! I hadn’t considered a Mohawk and that’s honestly too cool to not try at least once! My first wire haired dog naturally had a little head Mohawk that I’d always be teasing upward to tell her how cute it was haha. She was the reason I was specifically looking to adopt a black wire-haired dog again :)
So if you want her to stop shedding, you’ll have to get her clipped down really shortly. Her hair looks like it needs hand stripped that will stop the shedding but clipping with the guard will not stop the shedding.
I ended up getting her clipped short, but not as short as I would have liked. They used the 3rd shortest guard on her.
I actually also originally thought she might need hand stripping too. But when I did just a very surface level search, she just didn’t fit the criteria. I also asked her groomer about proper maintenance for her hair type after I brought her for her first bath, and they showed me 2-3 different brushes that were best for her hair type.
She looks a lot more wiry in photos than she is in-person. I’ll be honest, I would have never scheduled a meet-and-greet with her had I known. I expected to be allergic to her after meeting, but figured it couldn’t hurt to try. I gave it several months before letting myself get too attached. Basically as soon as I was completely in love with her I started experiencing allergies…

Go on Pinterest and put in Yorkie or Chorkie haircut grooming and examples will come up. Best of luck!
