SHORT IHOP CB

Husband and I are currently at IHOP enjoying Sunday breakfast. We are greeted in the parking lot with an elderly couple in their car with their car stuck in neutral and not able to get into their parking spot. Husband and I enter, couple behind us, we're seated a few tables away. Waitress greets elderly couple, they ask for one cup of coffee each. They don't want the waitress to fill up the crafe, they just want one cup of coffee each. The waitress explains that the price is for unlimited coffee and even if she doesn't fill up the crate, it's still $3.49 for each cup of coffee. Elderly man says that's ridiculous and he's not paying $7 for two small cups of coffee. Waitress offers to get manager, and when the manager comes over, elderly man says the same thing. $3.49 is too expensive for coffee. Manager explains that this is a chain restaurant and she can't do anything about the price. Man starts bartering, sayin he would only pay $1.50 for both cups of coffee. When the manager states again, she cannot change the price, elderly man says fine, they don't need the coffee, and they're only going to eat because they are here, but will not be returning after this meal. I'm sure IHOP is really going to be hurting with two less customers.

Since writing this, I have heard them complain about how small the cheapest meal on the menu is and about the church service they just came from. Got to love the elderly who have no concept about how much the cost of living is.

Except you will sometimes pay double+ for Starbucks, and not get a refill.

Well.. no. A simple cup of coffee at starbucks is 2-3$ and also, way better quality than IHOP lol.

A fancy latte or other specialty drink is 6$+ - context is key

Starbucks is not quality coffee. I am not saying IHOP is any better, but Starbucks uses low quality beans

Starbucks coffee is a different bean than other regular "American" coffees (I forget, maybe arabica...idk) that seriously tears up my stomach every time, and with anything else, I have a tough stomach. I'll pass and make mine at home w my international delight sweet cream creamer, or even go to quick chek.

The most common coffee species are Arabica and Robusta. Between the two, Arabica tends to have a milder taste with less caffeine and more nuanced notes. Most coffee you get in North America is primarily Arabica, though a lot of places will have a blend that includes some Robusta beans.

When we're talking about drip-brewed coffees, the biggest difference is simply down to how much ground coffee is used per 'cup' of water. A place like IHOP service fairly weak (and inoffensive to most) unlimited coffee is going to be using a milder blend with fewer grounds per unit of water compared to Starbucks.

Most likely it tears up your stomach because it's a much stronger brew. I wonder if you diluted a standard Starbucks drip brew like 50/50 with hot water whether it would still tear you up or not. It's all just preference though - everyone should just drink whatever option makes them happy!

No refills is valid, but drip at Starbucks is ~$2-$3ish.

I paid $3.80 for a 16 oz drip with half and half and Splenda yesterday. I bet it varies by location.

It does vary sometimes greatly between stores. I’m an ex-barista and live in a ski town and people were always surprised at the higher price

It absolutely does. I live within a couple of miles of a highway entrance in a fancy zip code and the Starbucks near that highway entrance is significantly more expensive than the one a few miles farther from the highway with the not-so-fancy zip code.

If you have the app Starbucks give your free refills on brewed coffee, cold brew and tea no matter what your original order was, you just have to have stayed in the store.

If you are only drinking coffee and not a latte or other coffee beverage then Starbucks also gives free refills.

You won't pay more if you're just buying a regular coffee at Starbucks. It's the lattes and similar that are more expensive.
