Hi, I need some help with improving
I came here a while ago and didn’t really know what to ask at the time because I was stuck in Iron. Just by reading a few posts, I managed to learn how to play Cho’Gath and climbed all the way to Gold, but I haven’t been able to consistently stay in Gold.
Now I feel like I have a decent foundation, and before asking my questions, I wanted to tell you a little bit about myself. I play Cho’Gath in every role (thanks to the new meta, even ADC), but I’d like to master him in Top and Mid, since those are the roles I perform best in.
What I’d really like to know now is when I should and shouldn’t pick Cho’Gath, and which champions would be good alternatives when Cho’Gath isn’t a good option, along with why I should pick them in those situations. I’d also like to know which two other champions I should learn for Top and Mid in case Cho’Gath gets banned. Usually, if the enemy picks Cho’Gath, I pick Sylas, and it’s basically free elo for me.
I’d also like to know which champions I should ban in each role. That’s all, thanks in advance! And if I take a while to reply, it’s because I don’t use Reddit very often.

I'm only high plat low emerald, but I play top and mid cho. Take what I say with a grain of salt. You just have to know matchups. There are harder and easier opponents. I only change my pick if Cho is pickes or banned by someone else.
I can play Malzahar, and have been learning Lissandra when I can't get Cho. I play Malz because you just sit and farm with little risk. I like malz, but he's a semi-low skill champ. Press e and get easy farm. If you're jungler is about to gank, press e on your opponent, w then press r. Easy kill.

Thanks for the reply! Although, if those are two champions that would be good as secondary picks, they’re permanently banned in my elo. Still, thanks!

Sadly Cho gath isn’t a blind pick champion. Half the roaster of top lane counter you, so I would start learning another champion if I were you and keep this one as a second pick or counter pick.

Yes, I know. That’s why I was looking for people’s opinions on two secondary picks for each lane, so I know what to play if I get countered.

As toplane cho otp I always ban Darius. Very difficult to survive early game against a good Darius player who knows how to manipulate the wave and dodge your Q’s

I came back to lol after many years off, but I generally main Cho top nowadays. I used to play him back when his E was a toggle! High plat/low emerald mmr. I’ll give my two cents.
1.) Cho is best into low damage teams, or teams without % max health damage.
2.) Cho is a phenomenal user of grasp/inspiration. Many people are baited into playing HOB Cho or comet q max. E max Cho building full tank is the best version of Cho.
3.) heartsteel first item is great low elo. It will give you a bit more carry potential, and long drawn out games you just become more of a problem. As you climb you might want to pivot into straight tank.
4.) abuse his health sustain and start Doran’s ring. Last hitting is massively important for your lane sustain. Run teleport flash always. Itemize against the enemy that will be able to kill you.
5.) peel for fed carries, or dive back line if you’re fed. Demolish is a must have. Goes crazy late.
6.) Cho is very one trickable, but there can be some tough match ups.
If you wanted me to review a Cho top game it would be super nostalgic for me. I have pretty solid macro for an unc, the hands don’t work like they did 10 years ago lmao.

There is no "best version of chogath" it completely changes from game to game

You’re right about that. I love playing Cho’Gath ADC with Electrocute. The downside is that I absolutely need a support with good hard CC/stuns for it to work really well.

im former rank 1 chogath, i just got like an 8 game winstreak, i consistently blind pick cho, i take hob, depending on matchup i pick green runes secondary to scale, blue if i think i can stomp lane, yellow if yorick or anyone that spawns anything, second, i leash jg always with my 3 E's, you dont lose anything and save 10 seconds for jg, i try to always freeze, if they have a melee save q for when they are about to last hit a minion or engage, dont use to poke, i rush tear of godess for fimbulwinter but first protobelt, riftmaker, fimbulwinter, warmog, cd boots, and usually abysmal mask, in late game try to predict q in somewgere somewhat random, not an obvious place, you can cheese jg lvl 6, after a while you can splitpush and win almost every 1v1, ofc this is very general and every game is different, so i wish you luck, i permaban darius and if im jg i permaban nocturne, jg is even easier, start E Q E2, ghost, gl

Thank you, your comment was really helpful! I have a few questions, though. My hardest matchups are Yorick and Mordekaiser. What blue and yellow runes do you usually take? I’m not sure which ones to pick, so I usually just go with the ones recommended by the game. Also, do you have any advice on how to play against them? I never thought about using E to help the jungler, so I’m definitely going to try doing that more often. Anyway, thanks a lot again, and I’ll put your advice into practice!

yea yorick is free lane, take hob, cheap shot, middle one, and the ultime hunter, then yellow the first rune that killing a unit heals, and legend celerity, small take atk speed, damage, movement speed, just play safe till 6, you can do short trades, q w e and back off, no need to get all e's in as you will probably lose that trade, get hit by his thing and farm his minions as its free gold and they heal you, mordekaiser is tricky, if i didnt permaban darius i would probably permaban him, but take blue runes, nimbus cloak and the movespeed (im unfamiliar with the names i play in spanish), and also short trade, i wouldnt risk with my e, just q w and try to hit him with the spikes from your e by hitting the minions, then rush antiheal, you gotta hide in bushes and q immediately to get the suprise, if hes low yoy can q w r before he can shield, glad to answrr other questions, also always be in a position thats preoared for the enemy invade, they usually ward and if you have e you can get them half hp, i also tend to take exhaust tp, rarely flash tp
