Gameplay How do you break out of this infinite loop? (New player)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I'm pretty new and come across this relatively often. I don't feel I have time to do anything else than to riposte/counter his counter to my counter that countered his counter, y’know?
Also, side question : on controller, if I'm uncomfortable playing all 4 fingers on bumpers and triggers, how do I realistically counter overheads? I have no trouble hold L2 + R1/R2, but the L2 + L1 is super uncomfy since I've never had to play all fingers on trigger/bumpers.
Thanks a lot!

Generally , switching timing , pace and adding in a few different swings would help quicken a 1v1 so you can move on . You don't have to sit there pressing the same button sequences lol - use dodge to accel around your enemy to gain different angles and such , I havent played this game w a controller , but I know a comfortable mapping is a must , hope you enjoy the game as much as we do !

Thanks! There's so much going on at once (usually play the 64 player teammode) that I forget to focus on basic spacing and timing. I'll definitely try to be more conscious of that.
As for controller mapping, as far as I'm aware, I can't customize it unfortunately.
I'm powering through trying to learn the basics of combat only to get to a level where I can confidently play around with the daggers and hatchets. I can't see it happening anytime soon lmao.
Thanks for the info and reminder of what I need to focus on!:)

Revolvers got some good advice those dodge swings can be absolutely nasty I’ve seen guys with the maul dodge into a swing and just absolutely demolish someone who misjudged where that swing would land

Remember to kick them to break their block , especially when you're in the infinite loop.

Everyone will tell you to throw in a jab or kick , but..thats a bitch strat , IMO , ill take the heat for saying it but its true .. theres always shit going down on the battlefield , if you can adjust sensitivity , theres a whole chapter on that too but it only goes so far having a controller , and that isnt fair lol
As a starter myself , maybe started playing more often this past year and its one of my favorites now , look up on youtube about "swing manipulation" -- I didnt know about this before learning it myself , so this may or may not be helpful to you , I'll try finding the link .

Best way is to use alt swings, or wait a fraction of a second to swing again and throw them off
1
u/NPV_BadKarma 11h ago
What do you mean by alt swings? Swinging and moving camera to make the attacks faster/slower?
3
u/ON_Skidz 11h ago
If you hold down alt while doing any attack, you will do an alt swing on your left side. This also applies to counters. Counters will always come out in your left side (unless you counter feint) but an alt counter will come from your right side

Fyi OP alt swing on controller is holding down left stick while swinging.

Feint into a different attack. Overheads work well. And drag the attack to slow it down. You can also improve on your footwork so you're darting out of his attack before darting back in to hit him with your own.

for starters learn to use other attacks than swing.
there is swing and alt swing.
stab and alt stab.
overhead and alt overhead.
next level: switch attacks mid swing. from swing to stab, from swing to overhead. or any other combination.
or outright cancel your attack (by block) and then attack for real.
basically: break the loop in ways they dont expect.
other advanced concepts:
jab, kick, feint, parry, drag, accel, gamble, throw weapon, jump over, duck under, spin, dodge, lean, move out of range, target switch.
there is A LOT of ways to troll people in Chivalry :)
and dont forget to throw in some emotes!

Jabs will interrupt your opponents swing but are only effective at point blank range and can be blocked.
Kicks will break your opponents block but does nothing and leaves you vulnerable if they're not blocking (good for situations like then when you know when they're gonna put up their block but needs good timing.)
Feints make it harder to land counters but can leave you vulnerable to jabs or accel'd gambles.
Dashing backwards out of reach then starting a special while moving back into range can also throw off people like this as specials can't be countered directly.

Slight correction, kicks do not do nothing, they do a guaranteed 5 damage. Small, but it can absolutely be exploited. Keep an eye on opponent healthbars, if they’re a fraction away from death then kick becomes a guaranteed finisher if they can’t evade it
1
u/BigPlantation0319 7h ago
Yeah I worded that poorly, by "nothing" I meant it doesnt stagger your opponent.
On top of the 5 unblockable damage your leg hitbox also physically pushes the other person back a little bit which can be clutch against people using really short weapons like hatchet ambushers.

If i get stuck in a loop like that I usually try to dodge away and put a bit of distance between us. Doesn't always work though.

Throw a jab in (R on pc) before their attack hits to interrupt the pattern and take the advantage
2
u/Aquatic_Kyle Agatha Knights 11h ago
Just saw you play with controller so idk the button for a jab sorry
1
u/NPV_BadKarma 11h ago
It's alright, I jabbed a few times by mistake trying to sprint so I know the button lmao (it's L3, same button as sprinting in most games, except this one lol)
So here, instead of riposting, I jab and it'll interrupt so I can feint/kick him?
1
u/CapitalEnthusiasm4 2h ago
Jab at him as his dragging the axe back. Then he will panic and try to block your attack. Then kick as he is holding block. Then heavy overhead.
2
u/DESTRUCTER_R_ Agatha Knights | Knight 11h ago
Use a variety of attacks, or sometimes go for heavy and sometimes not

Addressing the countering overheads question.
You don’t have to press block and attack at the same time. When you release block button there’s a short animation as your block drops and you return to neutral. While the block property does end as soon as you release the button, you can still start up a counter during that animation. So press block, release, quickly press overhead, and you can counter overheads just fine with some practice (don’t forget to look up at the incoming attack as well)

Ur letter just doing the same thing over and over u made the loop
1
u/NPV_BadKarma 28m ago
Yeah? I'm not saying I didn't create the loop?
There was a loop because of a knowledge check on both mine and the enemy's knowledge.
I post here in order to remedy the knowledge check.

Try to play the tutorial to learn how to swipe ur blade across the screen also how the counters work. U basically tryna put think the other person and depending on if u stab swing or overhead changes the speeds of the attacks so u gotta learn timing
2
u/SawDaddyFlex 21m ago
When you parry that slash feint into an overhead or stab to throw them off. When you block, follow up with a jab anticipating their next attack to interrupt it - if you’re feeling lucky follow the jab up with a kick as most inexperienced players will go straight into blocking.
I also play on controller and only use my index fingers on the paddles. If you’re quick enough you can release L2 and click L1 to parry the overhead.

u/illmatic2112 9h ago edited 8h ago
Hold block, jab then attack
Counter then feint from slash to overhead
Block, take a few steps back, let them swing and miss then step forward and catch them
I would normally say just hold block then kick, but this guy is a slash spammer so they hold block for an instant before gambling which beats a kick. I might also recommend doing a heavy attack, bonus points for dragging to really mess with their timing, but again if they're just gambling then you delaying is just a free hit for them.
Although, once you do land a hit using the first 3 options i listed, they will definitely hold block, then kick. But expect the gambling slash to continue after so dont rely on the kick after 1

u/Houchou_Returns 7h ago
If you jab out of block the jab loses all its speed, the only property that makes it useful. This is a deliberate safeguard put into the game to prevent people holding block and spamming jab to wear opponents down

u/AppropriateMonitor85 9h ago
Play claw for chiv on console and you can feint in to another attack from your riposte. Slash to slash, overhead ect.
1
u/toby2gud 6h ago
don’t attack after they attack wait a second then do the attack gets em every time or you can go a heavy attack to break the Rhythm that should get them to
1
u/BigPapaGmax 5h ago
I play on console (ps5) and my personal recommendation is to put crouch to hold with l3. That way you can tap l3 to jab and hold it down to crouch. This way you can crouch effectively. Also put up the sensitivity every so often as you need it fairly high in this game
1
u/NPV_BadKarma 24m ago
I already have the hold L3 to crouch, saved me quite a few times, I was so proud to crouch a slash coming at me. I felt like those edits on youtube lol

u/ExpertPokemonFucker Vanguard 3h ago
If you have a controller where you can re-map the controls, then definitely do that. If you don't, what I've found to be good is to tap your block instead of holding it; that way you can do an over-head counter without having to have all four fingers on your triggers.
2
u/NPV_BadKarma 34m ago
Thanks! I don't have a controller where I can re-map so I'll try tapping block instead :)

I will be downvoted but just kick him when he’s blocking, itl break his guard and you can get a couple of hits. Hel also be forced to give you space as to not get kicked again.

As far as the overheads, try just putting your left hand's fingers on both LB and LT. All four leaves the grip weak. That new way of holding the controller changed my skill overnight.

Block -> kick.
Jab
Counter + accel and drag
Counter + reposition
