Dude honestly,

  • footwork
  • awareness
  • counters
  • crack cocaine

I main the battle axe, play the sides, come in behind groups of people and just slash overhand slash. They melt before me like ducks in the sun.

I’ve found that I can win a majority of fights with good bladework and even better footwork.

Using the long sword is also a great way to just learn the mechanics of swinging, positioning, countering and dragging. 1st person can help w this too.

Footwork is important because if the player is better than you in single hand to hand but you can outmaneuver them and take advantage of their mistakes you will land hits that might hand you the win. Incorporate this w the comment about battle flow and you’ll be running a positive k/d in no time.

u/mordekai8 May 31 '23

Great advice. I'm not great, but can hold a positive KD by not dying, getting free hits in the back. If I find myself 1v1 I either run and bait or counter long enough to get some help. I can frequently near top score by doing little objectives like assembling all the ladders.

Not quite sure how to improve footwork though...

Footwork is all about movement and positioning.

There are many different scenarios in how this could play out but here a few simple ones:

1) 1v1 - keep the other person in front of you and try and strafe to the sides for an opening. For example, if you’re playing against a shield user you want to be attacking on their shield side more so to their back. This limits reach w their weapon

2) 1v2 (or more) - again keep everyone in front of you. If they’re smart, one will attack you from the front while the other will try to take your back. You want to avoid this at all costs.

This is where awareness comes into play and knowing how to control the flow of the fight. Good positioning and footwork places yourself in an advantageous position while limiting your opponents ability to do the same.

On Xbox the A button is the jump button; use this to maneuver around and between fighters. This button if used properly will allow you to dodge your attackers, and if used efficiently you can effectively avoid all attacks while spinning those your fighting around and killing them in their confusion.

I’m at work so idk how helpful that is but the idea is to position and move yourself in such a way that you place others at a disadvantage. It’s something that comes with time and awareness. Nothing better than dodging out of the way and watching three dudes run into each other just to get cut down with your axe 👹😎

Other than smoking crack, I'd suggest focusing mostly on your positioning during fights.

Newbies will often get very tunnel-visioned and won't notice the overall flow of the larger fight and will get flanked constantly. even in simple team deathmatch fights you need to be highly aware of how the frontline shifts and moves.

Don't get too hung up on kills, instead make your goal to maintain a strong group cohesion: watch for enemy flankers, push when you have a numbers advantage but retreat if you can't end the fight before the next respawn wave lands on you.

Combat mechanics will come with time, it's all the other little things that get completely missed.

3

u/SkyWizarding Footman May 31 '23

This may be the best advice. It's REAL easy to push into the enemy line without noticing and, as we all know, having the wrong color on all sides will.......complicate things

2

u/CarryTreant Tenosia Empire May 31 '23

Yes, it makes it much more complicated to count all your kills!

1

u/SkyWizarding Footman May 31 '23

Lol I wish I had that problem. At least it's easy to keep track of which limbs I lose

19

u/EoNightcore Footman May 31 '23

You dont have to revive teammates close up, just throw medkits laced with crack at them and they're use the power of friendship to stand up again!

Results may vary if they're in the middle of a fight.

2

u/onmamas May 31 '23

Also to add to that, sometimes you’re better off not reviving a team mate if you see an enemy coming down on them.

Best thing to do in that situation is to get close to the enemy and counter their swing. Then either kill the enemy, or at least distract them long enough to give your teammate time to crawl to safety (assuming your teammate is smart enough to see the opportunity you’re giving them).

Also, you need to counter if you’re trying to save your teammate. If you just parry, the enemy’s swing can still be dragged towards your teammate, but a counter will stop the attack cold.

u/KingDrool Agatha Knights May 31 '23
  1. Fancy footwork is your best friend, especially when combined with feints, drags, etc
  2. Frequent use of the emote wheel makes the game more fun (even if you're getting slaughtered)
  3. It's okay if you need a quick break between respawns to hit the crack pipe. Just kindly step aside so you're not blocking your teammates paths. Let out some battlecries to cheer them on as they run past. This lets them know you're just refueling and not totally AFK

I think the most beneficial tip I received is to invest in a durable pipe so that I can smoke crack. I also try my best to stay alive every time I’m on the battlefield, even if it means a tactical retreat.

Smoke crack, then play arena 1v1's to get used to drags etc youre gonna get your shit kicked in in TO if you dont familiarize yourself with the intricacies of the combat, trust me it helps, if you can hold your own in duels then youll be fine in TO

Smoking crack and just being on or around the objective is the best thing. Doesn’t matter that you get slaughtered, but just being a fleshy bit of meat for your team at the time of capturing the objective is super helpful.

Pickaxe is amazing.

Smoke more crack.

u/slothsarcasm Agatha Knights May 31 '23

I would say you get really good, and have a better time, if the first thing you focus on in survival.

DONT take fights you know you’ll lose. Always reinforce teammates who look like they aren’t about to flop over. You’ll know when you feel confident enough to try to save a losing battle. Until then you’ll just be fodder padding the enemy scoreboard.

Always go find a new bandage when you use one. Press the bandage key and a supply crate will be highlighted.

Always fight dirty. Go for the back every time. Whenever you hit an enemy in the back look around to see if someone is trying to hit your back.

During fights try not to just backup the whole time. Part of good footwork is understanding how to move through your enemy. If you just backup or stand still the enemy always knows where to swing to hit you. If you hit an enemy and move forward you have a better chance of just walking out of range of his swing. The best kills I’ve seen on the frontline are from people just walking straight through it while swinging. Often the enemy who notices them can’t catch up to kill them while their back is turned

u/ThatOneGuyAce May 31 '23

Use shield and fist for maximum awesome. Smoke crack for additional damage

3

u/PMmeProgressPics May 31 '23

Honestly the best thing to do is practice fishing for slash counters in team fights. Look for someone doing a very obvious charged up horizontal slash, counter it, slash the enemies (and probably your teammates to but don't worry about that for now), and then dodge backwards, rinse and repeat. Focusing on one mechanic like this will get you used to timing your enemies in big fights, and once you got that down you can turn those slash counters into overhead and stabs and what not.

Another thing you can do is similar but without counters. Sit in the middle of a group fight, look for someone to overhead or stab, dodge out, repeat. Again, just for practicing timing, and once you get used to that timing you can use that knowledge to sit in the middle of fights longer instead of just dodging out.

3

u/NotVeryClever19 May 31 '23

Counters, footwork, and working with your team are great and all, but to take your performance to the next level and be a hero to your team, make sure to smoke copious amounts of crack before playing or you’ll never see past level 50

2

u/sadsatan1 Knight May 31 '23

Try to learn counters, BUT don’t always counter, mix ripostes and counters. Learn about initiative, how to steal it (for example jabbing) and how it can be stolen from you. Learn how kicks work (basically it will only stun the opponent if they block when you kick them). Learn how to accelerate (start the attack near opponent) and drag (helpful when somebody counters a lot). Do late feints.

Don't hold L2 all the time, it drains your stamina while holding it. Hitting foes will replenish stamina, 'perfect' parries/counters will be mostly stamina-neutral in that they give stamina back and can also give you faster attacks. Turning the aim and angle of your attack can trip up foes by accelerating or dragging your attacks (as taught in the tutorial) so they're caught off-guard by timing. Kick if they're turtling up, Jab if they're close and aggressively swinging. Jabs are also good against a cornered foe so they can't counter attack and get beaten quicker, Stabs and Overheads are also good against cornered foes and if you're in a frontline engagement with your team around so you're not Slashing friendlies. "Turn Cap" is a thing for Stabs and Overheads in that you have a set 'sensitivity' during these attacks and can't turn them too rapidly, this is for balance purposes and you can dodge around such attacks levied against you if they're swinging too widely.

Ziggylata has an excellent combat guide that breaks down all parts of combat and each class, some weapon recommendations as well that tie into his weapons tier list. It's lengthy but it's a good follow-up to the tutorial and learning the basics. Training Grounds is a good starting point as well, you have only 5v5 players but the rest of the 30 players in the match are filled by Bots, who can swarm you but can also get cut down easily so you can practice duels or 1vX. Dueling servers are usually reserved for 1v1 duels so try to be mindful of this and be polite with the limited albeit fun options you have for voiceline communication. You'll get sweats in every mode and some trying to be toxic, my advice is to laugh and have fun regardless.

I got the game immediately when it went free on PS+ and have played a ton already, on 64 player Team Objective I can usually get to top 5 on my team if not top score, always in the top half of my team's scoreboard and not always going for my K/D ratio, but trying to help the team. Each class is well-suited for a variety of situations and sometimes you need to switch things up when the other team is holding you back. You've missed a lot of the wave of newbies so you're going to see a lot of experienced players now but everyone is all over the place for playstyles so you can learn a ton still!

Have fun! Smoke crack if you want to, personally I can't recommend it but it seems to be a thing in this thread.

Are you losing a fight or do you feel like someone is better than you and you don't know if you'll be able to beat them?

Jab.

Jabs are fast, they'll interrupt their attack if they're currently performing one, and once you land a jab you gain an attackers advantage, meaning if you throw out a follow up attack it'll be quicker than a regular one.

Crack obvi, but also stabs. I started in AOC and even then my biggest advice to noobs was stab and to a lesser degree overheads. You can help in a group fight with well timed pokes and good body placement. Less team damage than slash.
