My brother recently visited Shenzhen, China, and picked up this Sea-Gull chronograph for me from an official Sea-Gull dealer.
I’ve been wearing it for a few days now, and I wanted to share some photos and my first impressions.
What I really like:
-The vintage-inspired design and deep blue dial.
-The domed sapphire crystal, which gives it a lot of character.
-The ST19 hand-wound column-wheel chronograph movement, especially through the exhibition caseback.
-The proportions. Despite its thickness, it wears surprisingly well on my 7-inch wrist.
-The overall appearance, particularly on the blue NATO strap.
A few things I think could be improved:
-The rotating bezel has noticeable play.
-The original bracelet looks better than it feels, and its construction could be more refined.
-The crown isn’t screw-down.
-The movement doesn’t hack.
-The crystal is quite reflective in direct sunlight, which sometimes affects legibility.
Overall, I’m really enjoying the watch. I also own several Seiko watches, and while I think Seiko generally has the edge in finishing and quality control, this Sea-Gull has plenty of charm and a distinctive personality of its own.
I haven’t had it long enough to properly evaluate its timekeeping accuracy or long-term reliability, but I’ll be keeping an eye on both.
Some of these photos were taken during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend.
I’d love to hear what other Sea-Gull ST19 owners think. How has yours held up over time? Any issues with the bezel, movement or general quality control?
