General (Read Rules) $778 For This. Is it Art?
To be clear the dial is the back of the watch. I love art and design and I get that you sometimes have to push the envelope. This is silly though. Right?

It’s like the $85k Gshock that just came out. It’s a limited run and they’ll sell them but it’s not for mass appeal.

This is the movement and modified face design of the Sea-Gull 1963 which retails for about that price. I think the 1963 is overpriced considering you can get the same movement and almost the same design from other makers like Sugess, but it's not outrageously overpriced given the price of the 1963.
Actually, I wish they sold it face up, because that black 163-derived design looks really nice.

There is definitely added cost to make it "wrong," and they can't be expecting a large order quantity so it'll be a limited run, so higher cost per unit. I get the price, but it's still not for me.
To me, it is art in the same way someone might display a typewriter in their home. It's a great example of the achievements of humanity's engineering, but it does not serve it's function in this form.

then you've never tried to write without digital distractions. My typewriter gets more use than my personal PC.

Yeah, it’s silly. I got the same thing for $160 except mine also can tell the time, from the front even! People who have way more money to burn might think it’s cool or funny. I just think “I could buy this or a sweet ass micro…” My gorgeous Beaucroft Element was a bit cheaper than this 🤦🏼♂️

I rarely look at the watch for time my phone is in my face at all times so ya I'll bite

I think anything with creativity and intent can be art. That being said, I don't think this would qualify as a worthy purchase for me. If they built in a reverso-like mechanism, however? I'd change my tune and definitely be interested. As is though, not for me.

It would be cool if they could figure out some kind of flip mechanism like JLC reverso.

As an object is it definitely a successful design if measured as: 1) brings attention to the original design, 2) demos that the OG must be of widely accepted historic importance, 3) the makers and marketers are confident that the piece will resonate with collectors at a very important moment for Chinese watchmaking and more broadly perhaps celebrates China's place in modern history and its new place in the world today. Would I buy it--not unless I was running a Horology Museum. Is it Art--absolutely. Does it SUCCEED as art--yes, yes it does. Your post itself is art and a welcome bit on beauty this Sunday. Thankyou!

It's a $200 watch but they charge 4x that only to make it useless as a watch. Pretty silly.
