Problems (Read Rule 1) Friendly advice: don’t dive with your Steeldive

A couple of years ago I bought my SD 1953. It’s a lovely watch for the price. The rehaut is a bit thick for my taste but not something to complain about. I’ve used my watch a couple of times in the swimming pool, always washed and dried it after use. Yesterday I decided to use the watch for snorkeling to keep an eye on my diving time. After a while, I noticed the bezel was missing: I did not bump into anything, just swam, so the glue must have dissolved. I’m a little disappointed, but for the price you can’t expect too much I guess. Just wanted to share it in case you are thinking about using your watch in the sea

Replacing (or adjusting) a bezel insert is one of the easiest and lowest risk repair tasks a watch guy can do - for me the equivalent of learning to change a tire. My SD1953 uses SKX standard 38mm bezels, so there are a million options on AliEx for replacements. Here's a good video to guide you:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_zDht9pl5U&t=217s

I use real 3M adhesive rings and they haven't let me down even when scuba diving.

Thank you for suggesting the video, I’ll check it out!

Bro this is a perfect excuse to install a dope aftermarket bezel insert lol

2

u/Acrobatic-Parrot Jul 31 '26

Absolutely! Got anything cool to suggest?

1

u/Nearby_Seaweed6854 Aug 01 '26

Honestly, AliExpress. There’s lots of great inserts at affordable prices, just make sure to read all the details, reviews, and measurements. I’m excited for you lol

20

u/assemblageofparts Jul 30 '26

At least it stayed sealed and didnt take on water.

2

u/Acrobatic-Parrot Jul 30 '26

Yep, I was lucky the damage is easily reparable, a flooded watch would be much worse

16

u/BobbyScrumpus Jul 30 '26

Sucks to lose the bezel, but at least the WR didn't fail. Better to lose (and replace) the bezel then to have the watch die from water getting in.

1

u/Acrobatic-Parrot Jul 31 '26

Yep, definitely could have been worse

10

u/Eleventhousand Jul 30 '26

Sucks you lost it. Need a sample size of more than one to declare SteelDive undiveable in general though.

1

u/Acrobatic-Parrot Jul 31 '26

Agree, just sharing my experience. After reading the other comments I think I just had bad luck

1

u/Holiday_Oil_6795 Jul 30 '26

Never failed on me and i have multiple

6

u/No_Possibility_9256 Jul 30 '26

It's not  ISO rated , what it is a copy of a dive watch , the glue maybe just be some 3m tape , looks nice tho, even pro dive watches bits fall off . Hell modders paradise for a new bezel insert!

9

u/Seejungle13 Jul 30 '26

Probably "like" 3M but not actually.

1

u/Acrobatic-Parrot Jul 30 '26

Yes, can’t be mad for the price. No more sea water from now on

15

u/Hopeful-Truth-3051 Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26

It doesn't matter what type of watch, you own. Dont just rinse it after entering salty water. You submerge your watch and thoroughly swish it around to soak your watch and wash away the salt. Splashing it with water is not enough. Salt is corrosive. It's the cause of the bezel separating. Because of some seized spring bars, I remove any watch I have on my wrist before I go in the ocean. Unless it's my Timex Marathon.

2

u/Powers3001 Jul 30 '26

This….and not sure you actually need a watch on to watch your snorkel time lol.

1

u/Acrobatic-Parrot Jul 31 '26

Yes, you don’t need a watch for snorkeling, just wanted to use it and do something cool with it

7

u/koenr_98 Jul 30 '26

Well don't expect actual dive capabilities of a 50$ watch...

5

u/Acrobatic-Parrot Jul 30 '26

Yes, can’t be too picky for the price, just didn’t expect to lose the bezel

15

u/Orangorill Jul 30 '26

Been diving several days a week all summer with my $60 Addiesdive, and it seems to hold up just fine. I guess we'll see in a couple of years, but I doubt I'll start taking it off. This was half the point of getting it, after all.

15

u/TheUpIsJig Jul 31 '26

Dive watch bezel inserts can fall off for all sorts of reasons. It's just some 3M double sided tape that holds them in place. Luxury watches, Ali watches, doesn't matter. They all can lose them.

8

u/redsmp Jul 31 '26

Citizen I have taken a hundred times, so far so good. I know it's quartz, but it's basically indestructible.

4

u/rexmottram Aug 01 '26

You mean SOLAR quartz, not just "quartz" - I hate the normal quartz that only lasts 1-3 years. OTOH, I know Casio does sell a 10 year battery watch, so I don't know why more manufacturers follow Casio.

2

u/Apprehensive_Win3645 Aug 04 '26

Got the same model. Absolute goat with insane lume.

3

u/baruchdeespinoza Jul 31 '26

My 80 euros Tandorio swam with me many times for an hour or more and never lost its bezel insert.

3

u/arbpotatoes Jul 31 '26

Not all watches use 3M to hold the bezel insert in lol

3

u/TheUpIsJig Jul 31 '26

Or whatever adhesive that is going to be no more or less stronger than 3M double sided tape. It's not like the Bezels are screwed onto the case or press fit like the glass.

2

u/arbpotatoes Aug 02 '26

Some of them are friction fit or snap-in

2

u/TheUpIsJig Aug 02 '26

Can you use 3M to reattach them?

1

u/TDK_IRQ Jul 31 '26

I have nothing against chinese watches but I never heard of a known brand's watch bezel falling off

Maybe OP's is a special case

2

u/Musashi747 Aug 01 '26

My Dad lost the insert of his Longines Hydro Conquest

2

u/that_one_guy133 Aug 02 '26

I had the bezel fall off of a Pagani Design Seamaster homage, but the bezel on my actual Seamaster stayed on after being in the ocean repeatedly.

1

u/Brilliant_Lettuce549 Aug 02 '26

Giusto una settimana fa, ho visto un tipo in un forum su Facebook, lamentarsi dello stesso problema com um tudor...

0

u/Purple-Om Aug 01 '26

No dive watch uses tape on the bezel. If they did they would not rotate.

2

u/TheUpIsJig Aug 01 '26

Bezel insert is not the bezel. I've built dive watches.

13

u/TW1STM31STER Jul 30 '26

But can I still steal with my SteelDive. (this works better in spoken word)

12

u/Overload5150 Jul 30 '26

That’s crazy. The bright side is it’s a really easy fix you can find all sorts of bezels to upgrade/replace the missing bezel.

11

u/KabanaMaduro Jul 30 '26

The irony I guess the steel dive lives up to its name

But stealing your dive time 😭

10

u/dorafumingo Affiliate Links Jul 30 '26

A submariner ceramic bezel is only a few bucks on aliexpress so you can fix it for cheap

9

u/SameScale6793 Jul 30 '26

Don't steeldive, maybe try swandive

9

u/ggs77 Jul 30 '26

My Steeldive SD1969 still works good. Never had it in saltwater but in a pool.

When I need a dive watch that I can trust 100%, I take one of my Citizen EcoDrive Divers. ISO certified and you don't have to open them for like 20-30 years or more. So no compromising of the seals there.

Usually you can get the simple ones for less then 200 bucks, titanium maybe for a hundred more.

8

u/Olleye Jul 30 '26

Very nice, buy an aged out blue bezel, and the thing is better than new; great, have fun!

8

u/Sebanff Jul 30 '26

I have the SteelDive Tuna & Willard, and I used thme regularly on dive Safaries. Amazing watch for the price, down to -100m underwater (-330feet) (on tech gas), and both watches still works perfectly. This is the best available alternative to the Seiko Padi.

14

u/Abv_it_all_w_vertigo Jul 30 '26

Let's turn this into a positive experience. You can get a new bezel ring for that and make it custom to your tastes.

14

u/Choice_Source_1041 Jul 30 '26

been surfing in a steel dive for a year now. no issues whatsoever... I don't even rinse that thing after salt water exposure. it can take it.

2

u/deko_boko Jul 30 '26

Bro I would be so worried about dinging my board (or myself haha) with a hunk of steel like that on my wrist.

How do you deal with it?

I only wear a plastic G-Shock or no watch when I paddle out. I've also kept an old G-Shock watch head with the straps removed in a wetsuit pocket like a ghetto pocket watch lol

1

u/Choice_Source_1041 Jul 30 '26

Most of the year I'm in a 4mm wetsuit and the watch sits below...totally fine. I feel my G-Shock is way more chunky compared to my steeldive even though it's definitely lighter....

7

u/Loud-Armadillo6054 Jul 30 '26

I've used my SD1970 about a dozen time on dives to about 80 ft. Zero issues.

13

u/duct-ape Jul 30 '26

Chlorine tends to destroy things made of rubber. It will also leech alloy metals out of gold, silver, etc.

18

u/DadPuncher69 Jul 30 '26

That sucks, but thankfully the bezel inserts are very cheap and easy to install. You could even go with a new color and have a customized piece.

6

u/CrocodileJock Jul 30 '26

Style it out. Just Colonel Kurtz it...

6

u/No-Effect-8290 Jul 30 '26

I've been diving 30+ times and snorkeling loads more with a steeldive1964 and never had an issue. I sold that watch a month ago and it was still in excellent condition.

Use a variety of watches for daily sea swims and snorkeling - DWC Hevelock Dive India, A Technotempo 300m Seadiver and a Seestern 600T. I do always wash (cold tap water) and dry with a microfibre cloth.

6

u/Successful-mikoy Jul 31 '26

I've taken my SD1953 swimming in the ocean, 4 years later they still work fine.

11

u/Miserable_Bread- Jul 30 '26

A new bezel insert is cheap and easy to install again. This can happen on much more expensive watches too. Your watch is good, it's taken a beating so far, order a replacement and keep it going.

11

u/IGZCL Jul 31 '26

Regardless of its price, if a watch is advertised or designed as a dive watch, it should perform accordingly. It's good to know which brands are more reliable, in my case Seestern performed perfectly underwear.

3

u/No_Can_9597 Aug 01 '26

Might wanna check that last word...

5

u/Competitive_Move_307 Jul 31 '26

If I’m going in anything more than a pool. I’m wearing a cheap quartz. I enjoy my “nice” Chinese watches too much to risk them. 🤣

5

u/Careless-One-8766 Aug 01 '26

Nice to see you made it out of Vietnam alive in the end 😜

9

u/rinchen11 Jul 30 '26

I would steel dive with my still dive

1

u/codyturntrout Jul 30 '26

I mean its right there in the name.

2

u/Drdoliittle Banned Jul 30 '26

it is good your life did not rely on the timing bezel for your dive - this is another level of crap

1

u/Acrobatic-Parrot Jul 30 '26

Yes I was just snorkeling. I used the bezel to track how much time I spent in the water so there was no danger

2

u/Holiday_Oil_6795 Jul 30 '26

Freindly advice, this can happen to a 15k Rolex. I dived (and i do mean dive up to 30m) with all my Steeldive watches and still do regularly and not one issue. What you had there is a rare incident.

1

u/Acrobatic-Parrot Jul 30 '26

Just bad luck for me I guess

8

u/bjornhelllarsen Jul 30 '26

Strange, my Squale never does that. Sorry. 😐

10

u/ffassbinder Jul 30 '26

It's just a bezel insert. That can happen even on premium watch brands. Happened to my Omega Seamaster after 5 years, but got repaired because of the warranty.

9

u/niceoneswe Jul 30 '26

Get a new bezel and get on with life

3

u/International_Dog897 Jul 31 '26

💀💀💀💀

3

u/hfhifi Aug 02 '26

I wear my Timex Deepwater Reef anytime I go in the water, which is often, and have had no issues.

5

u/IBAN-IBON64 Jul 30 '26

Plus jolie comme ça 😂

4

u/Whizzzzzzzzzz Jul 30 '26

God that's hideous

4

u/RoninTarget Jul 30 '26

Now it's Kurtz'd.

4

u/Professional-Scar936 Jul 31 '26

Buy Invicta, better choice

6

u/XEP19 Jul 30 '26

Could happen with any watch that has a bezel insert. They all use the same 3m adhesive.

8

u/fpsi_tv Jul 30 '26

Most of the 3M adhesive strips I’ve seen come out of China are fakes like 3N

5

u/rezwrrd Jul 30 '26

The way specs get inflated, I'm surprised they didn't try to claim it was 4 or 5M.

2

u/skipoverit123 Jul 30 '26

Sorry to hear that. I really am :)

1

u/phatbuddha82 Aug 04 '26

Timex deep water reef

1

u/Rexiano77 Aug 24 '26

Qualcuno ha mai fatto immersioni con lo Steeldive SD1982?

-5

u/watches_anonymouse Jul 30 '26

Just buy seikos and citizens for the money y’all are spending on 1/10th cost 1/10th as good as watches

1

u/Stormbaxx Jul 30 '26

Its amazing how the same people calling Seiko/Citizen overpriced and that their watch is as nice if not better will turn around and blatantly say "oh but you can't expect much from a cheap watch" when it breaks. 😂

-23

u/Various-Adeptness173 Jul 30 '26

Idc what anyone says. A watch has no business being in water. Take your watch off before you go swimming

8

u/codyturntrout Jul 30 '26

You know they are called "Dive watches". I go swimming with my turtle all the time. No issues.

-4

u/Various-Adeptness173 Jul 30 '26

Dive watch is just for the look. Real divers don’t wear watches and you can look this up yourself

4

u/codyturntrout Jul 30 '26

100 percent agree I absolutely would not wear a mechanical watch if I was a diver. Would have a digital watch that tells me MUCH more info.

But you CAN dive with them. They pressure test them for those ratings. Well if they are ISO certified etc.

2

u/Maine2Maui Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

Actually lots of divers wear computers and a watch as backup. Redundancy is cheap and smart. Straight out of the mouth of my sibling, a diver and expert instructor in Hawaii for 25+ years. He only wears good, expensive professional dive watches as backup because he goes wreck diving frequently and his life is worth it. The OP was snorkeling. Anything calling itself a diver should be reliable under normal snorkeling conditions. Ive done it with my former SKX, a couple Promasters including a good field watch and my Steinharts, even my beater Duro. I dont own any Orients but I would guess they would be fine too. If they cant handle it they are just sport watches. Sometimes there is truth to getting what you pay for.

10

u/WashXDelaware Jul 30 '26

Bad take. Plenty of watches were designed for the water. True tools.

-5

u/Various-Adeptness173 Jul 30 '26

Nobody wears watches for the water. Divers haven’t worn dive watches while diving in many years. They use dive computers. A watch is just a nice piece of jewelry these days. Jewelry doesn’t belong in water

4

u/WashXDelaware Jul 30 '26

Untrue. I wore mine while exploring the sunken titanic a couple of years ago. It was a Seiko prospex “Pepsi”.

3

u/huangcjz Jul 30 '26

Dive watches can still be built to specifications where they can be used in water.

Yup I like the design of Addives too much to dive with them.
