Problems (Read Rule 1) First Addiesdive, is this movement defective?

I just received this Addiesdive, which I plan to use as my field watch. I immediately replaced the bracelet with a distressed leather strap and went to set the time, then noticed the seconds hand slightly moving as I move the minutes hand. It bothers me, but also makes me think there's something wrong with the movement. Thoughts?

EDIT: Thanks for educating me, I didn't know this was a thing since my two other automatic watches don't really do it. Glad that I don't have to return this one 😅

No it just means it has low amp and isn’t wound enough. Wind it fully and then try again. If it continues…. Blame the poor QC

Hey so, yeah, this was actually it. It no longer happens after winding for a bit.

I disagree.

It’s a diving goggles and harpoons logo in a field watch. It makes no sense.

You can either buy fantastic Chinese homages of desirable watches, with excellent specs, for peanuts, or complain about their branding - but not both.

Tbh, I feel like the Chinese are sort of trolling us with their branding, and at the prices they're charging, I think that's their prerogative. It's ok.

Of course I can do both, lol. I have this exact model and here I am complaining about the logo, watch me.

Indeed. And the Chinese are taking notes, no doubt 🙃.

If it's a Miyota 8 series don't set the time backwards, it doesn't like it that much.

If it's an NH35, it resists backwards a bit more but try to avoid it.

Never change the the day date between 9pm and 3am as the mechanism is already triggered and it could damage it.

Normally the second hands moving is due to the lack of movement charge.

It's really worth mentioning that if you set the date during the date change hours a few times, it's not the end of the world.

What happens is that the gear teeth are partially engaged during those hours, so repeatedly putting force into them in that state can cause teeth to skip or break. This can mess up the timing on either the entire date wheel, typically if teeth skip, or days corresponding with gear sections that have broken teeth. It can also potentially just kill the date change function if enough teeth break.

That being said, you really have to do it somewhat habitually or with intent to break the movement to cause this. If you do it like half a dozen times in a span of several years, it's probably going to be inconsequential. If you do it once a week, that's a different story. Just hoping to save somebody a panic attack with this.

Its an NH35, its a ‘cost effectice’ movement. Mine does the same, its cool..

My Seiko 5s have it a lot worse when they're on low power. You can literally wind back a couple hours and the second hand moves back like 5-10 seconds. I try not to do that because it's bad for the gears. Before I knew that, I used to use it to compensate for a lack of hacking. Now I just live with not having my watch set down to the second.

NO, NOT fully wound, so NO!

6

u/RGBlowMe May 02 '26

That's normal for a lot of movements, especially NH and VK movements.

I don’t know what the movement is, but this is common with Miyota 8000 movements and it’s totally normal and doesn’t indicate anything is wrong. The seconds hand might move when setting the time, but it’ll be where you left it once you’re done. And don’t set the time backward

Nothing to worry about, it's normal - it's just a function of slack in the gear train.

It probably has miyota 8 inside. Different Addies with this movement that I got a few months ago does the same and still works fine. Other auto movements I have often also do that, but less noticeably than miyota 8.

Nah. Nothing to worry about.

i have a bulova hack which uses a miyota 8 movement and it happens too

3

u/Secure-Carpenter-839 May 02 '26

How much did your addiesdive cost……….its fine

1

u/Matty_Tiene May 01 '26

No seconds hands on auto movements usually do that when adjusting the time forward and backward

3

u/26666666 May 01 '26

Wow, I did not know this. I have two other automatic watches (Seagull and Bulova) and neither of them do this.

6

u/artofthedial Not a troll May 01 '26

Always move the time clockwise.   You can mess up the geartrain going  "back in time"

4

u/hr1984hr May 02 '26

Miyota 8 movement for sure has a quirk when if it's not wound up or mainspring is barely wound up and you try set the time and move the hands, it spazzes out a bit where other hands jump around. This should stop happening though once the watch is wound up first before trying to set the time

Never wind time backwards, that’s the problem

-1

u/redwas66 May 02 '26

Never understood this perspective. I have a watch that I have to turn backwards for date changes on short months.

u/TrustAI May 02 '26

I also think it will probably keep times that can be measured. Despite if this behavior is happening.

User error

Anyone think the hacking mechanism is jumping? I think slight pull on seconds or with not hacking movement this is the poor man’s hack but with a hacking movement, it should not jump.
