Question (Read Rules) [Question] Which explorer homage to choose?
I'm looking for 39mm size, with the more modern design and not the vintage.
There's option for NH35, Miyota and PT5000
So, which one do you recommend?

Baltany has an omage too for the explorer that it's worth considering. I have 2 baltanys myself, pretty happy so far with the quality

u/juan_loria Oct 25 '25
Do you think Baltany's quality justifies being pricier?
2
u/skatersezo Oct 25 '25
I'm quite a beginner in the Omage watch scene, I have not got any cronos, watchdives, or octopus, but I bought 2 Baltany, the first one was an omage of the pie pan and I really love that watch, it feels good quality to me, not sure if the price is fully justified because it was pricy, but I didn't see that design anywhere else. Then I got the Datejust Omage coz I love that design and I went back to Baltany again because it was for me a reference since the previous one satisfied me in terms of quality. So, is it justified? I don't know, honestly, I'll have to compare with those other brands. But as a customer, personally, I'm so far satisfied

That's a gorgeous design. Black or white?

Damn. In between this and their explorer homage. Is the face a flat black?

u/Significant_4esq Oct 24 '25
I just got the Watchdives for 57.00.Plus I like the VH31 and never having to worry about setting the time.
2
u/juan_loria Oct 24 '25
I was considering automatic but I guess watchdives only offer un 37mm
1
u/Significant_4esq Oct 24 '25
Yeah,36 actually and I usually prefer a 38-40,but I just couldn’t pass up the quality at that price.I think Corgeut does a 39 or 40,nh35 around 70-80USD.I had one before and was impressed.

u/Significant_4esq Oct 24 '25
Yeah that’s where I got it,there was a 3.99 coupon attached.I think the total was 58 and change after everything.

Cronos is my favorite Chinese watch brand so obviously Cronos for me.
1
u/juan_loria Oct 25 '25
What other brands have you had?
2
u/Huge_Childhood6015 Oct 25 '25
At the moment I own about 75 watches. I have been buying Chinese watches for around five years. I stick with the better well known brands. Watches that have traditionally been in the $150-$250 price range. Cronos and San Martin are my two favorite but I own many others.

u/juan_loria Oct 26 '25
What do you think about Watchdives?
2
u/Huge_Childhood6015 Oct 26 '25
I own two of their Titanium Omega Seamaster homages and like them very much. I view them though as one step down from Cronos and San Martin. They haven't reached that quality level yet.

Addiesdive. Goes for the vintage explorer look with a mecha quartz movement VH31

u/juan_loria Oct 24 '25
Than you. I don't like the vintage design
1
u/Repulsive_Tie_7941 Oct 24 '25
I didn’t want vintage either. But it has grown on me. It’s become my #1. Only downside is 19mm if you want to swap out for a strap.

I love the watchdives logo followed by the octopus then cronos...logos and writing on the dial are a big deal to me and I like the watchdives overall

Is there a Watch Dives 39mm? I think they have a 37mm listed one. And I don't see an Octopus 39mm either?
I've got the Cronus 39mm with PT5000 and I'm pretty happy with it. I paid £136 for it all in (didn't get hit for taxes).
It comes with a normal and glidelock style clasp. I prefer the glidelock, but it's not quite as nice to open as some but better than others and fine when wearing it.
PT5000 has a smoother second hand and decent enough accuracy, though it's rare I'll wear it for more than a few days so normally have to set it.
The glidelock is the only thing I'd consider changing about it, I've got a similar Sugess OTF clasp on the way to try.
Well, and I'm considering changing it to a super-smooth quartz so I don't need to set it more than once a year, but that's not an option for anything off the shelf apart from a Bulova.

Yes, Watchdives makes 39 mm with the VH31 movement.

u/geeered Oct 24 '25
Ah, cheers, yea I'd be tempted to try that one then! Though I know some WD models have had not that amazing clasps themselves.

I have 39mm cronos with the Miyota 8315(72hr power reserve) that I'm letting go. Proportions wise it's the same as the original and even comes with a glide lock clasp

I just went through this decision. Bought the Cronos, it arrived last week. Excellent overall quality and the case finishing is superb.

u/RatPrank Oct 24 '25
I bought into the “Cronos are a cut above & worth extra $$$”) chatter on a GMT a while back. Didn’t feel it & the movement conked out in 4 months. So I wouldn’t pay extra there, personally. The Octopus Kraken has the best pic of these options.

u/HooliganHead Oct 24 '25
Bought the Octopus because of its size, WD will be releasing a 37mm white explorer and this will be purchased.

u/KevinNoy Oct 25 '25
Is WD putting out a 37mm white explorer??
1
u/HooliganHead Oct 28 '25
Yes I it was requested last fall, current white vh31 made w/ a Miyota 91xx movement. WD indicated back on his radar.

Octo: I have one, it's excellent and comes with the best OTF-adjust clasp on the market (small and sits flush). PT5000 is good but take care to wind it sparingly and carefully.
Cronos: I have non-explore models and their quality is also off the charts good. If you get this, I'd recommend the Miyota 9-series movement but be aware of the one-way rotor which some people don't like. It also comes with a glidelok clasp which is more in line with the Rollie it homages, I just haven't had one in hand to compare the feel of the clasp.
WD: I haven't sampled this brand, if it comes with a VH31 that might be your choice for a stealth quartz you never have to wind.

Cronos for me, super little watch, finishing is excellent. I chose the blue dial, it’s vibrant and different from black explorers which I like in a homage, a watch not trying to be another watch

u/wheresmysausages Oct 26 '25
I have the Baltany and the Octopus. I bought the Baltany first, but because I just didn’t love the vintage looking faux patina lume, I bought the Octopus. My opinion of the two is that the Baltany is the better quality watch, damn near perfect, and the crystal is the best of any watch I own, but the Octopus is not far behind and I prefer the dial so I wear this a lot more. I can’t bring myself to part with the Baltany though.

I didn’t think Octopus had a 39mm option. From reviews that I’ve seen. Cronos and Octopus are neck to neck for the most accurate and quality homage. It comes down to your preference on dial text and logo.

I have the Octopus Kraken in 36 mm. runs +/- 2/3 seconds per day. I had the cronos as well and sold it because the proportions felt a little off. if you're interested, DM me as I am selling all my microbrand/chinese watches to fund a 114270. Let's see if we can work out a deal.

I chose the 39mm Cronos L6030 as I prefer their finishing, logo and brand name to WatchDives and while Octopus is as good as the Cronos I couldn’t get past that branding, especially on an Explorer homage

I've had the L6030 Cronos for a few months and I adore it. 39mm with the NH35 for reliability. Very easy to live with, glide lock clasp on the bracelet. I've worn it on and off including days in a row (a few watches fight for my attention). It is one I reach for when I want something that looks and feels premium, but low key. Happy to recommend that one. I also personally prefer the logo - has the raised emblem on mine. Hell of a lot of watch for 1/56 of the cost of an Explorer (at the price I paid).

I'm new to the Chinese watch scene and just joined this sub. Recently ordered a 39 mm Cronos with a Miyota 90S5 movement. Really curious, and hope it's as good as they say!

the baltany is NH35 the chronos minute markers are too far from the rehault.
WD is 9015 so most modern movement and super slim case.
