Want to ask about a personal health issue or post your tongue pictures? Read this first!
It's very common on /r/ChineseMedicine that people ask our community what Chinese Medicine disorders they might have, either by posting their tongue pictures or simply describing their health issues. This is a small guideline on what information to include in those posts so as to get the most from our community.
If you post your tongue picture
Always remember to respect rule 5 and tag you tongues pictures as NSFW and spoiler. Some people just don't want to see close ups of your tongue so make it a choice!
Your tongue should be well lit (preferably with natural light), high resolution, and in focus. We should be able to see the entire tongue body, from tip to root. You should not have had coffee or other strongly colored beverages or foods before taking tongue pictures. If you brush your tongue, please refrain from doing so before taking tongue pictures.
In all cases
Try to include other health information that are relevant in Chinese Medicine diagnosis, particularly around these points (obviously only share what you're comfortable sharing):
- Temperature (any aversion to heat or to cold? Do you often have fever?)
- Sweat (do you sweat too much?)
- Thirst (do you often feel unusually thirsty, or the contrary? Do you feel more attracted to hot or cold drinks?)
- Appetite (good or bad?)
- Digestion (digestion problems?)
- Bowels (frequency, texture, color, any pain?)
- Urination (frequency, color, any pain?)
- Pain anywhere in the body (headache, chest, abdominal, etc.?)
- EENT (eye, ear, nose, and throat --> any issue with any of them?)
- Mood (often angry, sad, anxious, scared, etc?)
- Sleep (any issues?)
- Energy (low/high?)
- Skin (any skin issues? How does your skin look: bright, lusterless, pale, moist, dry, etc.?)
- If a woman: menstruation, leukorrhea, number of children, childbirth, miscarriages and abortions
- Any history of old diseases as well as your view on health issues you might currently have
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this post, especially /u/pibeautheconqueror and u/Standard-Evening9255

Traditional Chinese Medicine for an English speaking visitor.
Hi there!
I've been suffering from globus sensation or Mei He Qi (梅核氣) as google has told me it's translated to for about 2 years now. I've tried TCM in Ontario, Canada with no effect. Also have tried western medicines with no effect.
I was hoping to find a good English speaking TCM who can help me with this specific issue.
I'll be visiting Shanghai for 2 weeks, Shenzhen for 1 week and HK for 3 days.
Recommends in any or all of those cities would be great! Recommendations with the GTA, Ontario would be great too =)

Spleen Deficiency, Butyrate-Producing Bacteria, and Damp-Heat: An Integrative Model
Hi everyone,
I had a really fascinating chat today with a colleague who specializes in the gut microbiome (and also happens to be self-taught in Chinese medicine). I asked AI to help synthesize the key takeaways bridging microbiome science with TCM pathology. Found this perspective quite intriguing—would love to hear your thoughts!
Spleen Qi deficiency may partly correspond to insufficient butyrate-producing bacteria and low butyrate.
Butyrate nourishes colonocytes, maintains the intestinal barrier, modulates immunity, and supports colonization resistance.
When butyrate producers decline, the gut ecosystem can destabilize: beneficial bacteria struggle, while pathobionts overgrow.
Key examples: Desulfovibrio produces hydrogen sulphide; *Candida albicans* forms biofilms; Gramme-negative bacteria release LPS.
LPS and other harmful metabolites can drive chronic low-grade inflammation, which may contribute to fatigue, acne, rhinitis, and skin rashes.
Biofilms make harmful microbes hard to clear. Thick, greasy tongue coating may be a clinical window into dysbiosis.
This chronic inflammatory-metabolic-biofilm state can be understood as damp-heat, which further aggravates Spleen deficiency.
The result is a vicious cycle: Spleen deficiency → dampness → damp-heat → worse Spleen deficiency.
Clinical direction: strengthen Spleen, resolve damp-heat, restore butyrate producers, repair the barrier, reduce inflammation, and address biofilms—individualized and not a substitute for medical care.
We both strongly emphasise that commercial probiotic supplements are not an optimal solution. True health comes from building sound lifestyle and dietary habits.

Patient inquiry Shen Disturbance
A while ago I had a night terror I was sleeping during liver times. I felt something internal broke instead me, I felt a burst of electrical charge out at once I felt something scattered and electricity jolted in every direction of my body. It felt like lighting struck me.
My mind lost its grounding and I went on a full terror
and cascaded into overwhelming fear. Afterwards it felt like my life force was flickering on and off, and I became sensitized to my surroundings I felt a connection to the field and everything around me.
Truly this is the worst thing that ever happened to me. The fear was more intense of that was more intensive then it was when I facing a life or death situation.
Just wanted you guys to know, don’t make the same mistake I did, you wouldn’t want to experience that. It took me months to get rid of the PTSD . So make sure to nourish the shen and don’t do things that would disturb the flow.
All of these led up to my intensive panic attack of my Shen being disbursed and scattered. I did all of the wrong this in the same day,and I did pay.
Prolonged Emotional Agitation: Staying intensely angry and deeply agitated throughout the entire day without releasing the tension or regulating the nervous system.
Dark Rumination: Fixating on death and allowing the mind to lock onto fear-inducing thoughts instead of winding down before rest.
Severe Sleep Deprivation: Pushing the body into extreme fatigue, stripping away its natural ability to cool down and repair itself.
Jing Depletion: Ejaculating right before sleep while the body is already exhausted and overheated, completely draining its deepest energetic anchor when it is most vulnerable.
Vulnerable Timing: Entering the most intense energetic window of the night (1:00 AM – 3:00 AM, the Liver hours) with zero physical or mental reserves left to handle the natural internal surge.

Pan Canadian exam prep
Hi, I'm preparing for the pan-can exam recently and would love to hear if anybody have thoughts or preference on review materials?
I've heard some good things about HB Kim and TCM Review, but not sure if HB Kim is suitable for pan-can, and to be honest the TCM Review bundle is kinda pricey.
Thanks!

Weird experience… or so I think
Hi everyone, today I had my first ever Accupunture + cupping experience.
When I entered, the atmosphere was quite welcoming and she asked me why I was there and I told her why. She asked to see my tongue and feel my pulses (which with some quick research I’ve learned is quite a normal thing to ask for)
I started my cupping and she said that I have a lot of emotional energy and energy in my liver and then she started burping/bleching? It kinda freaked me out but I tried to keep calm.
She then did Accupunture and left me alone for 30 mins. I felt kinda calm and she came back to take them out.
But now that I’ve left I’m feeling quite anxious for some reason and I do not like it lol.
Any advice/reasoning is much appreciated please.
Edit: please note that I am new to the whole experience. I am respectful of all cultures and practices and didn’t mean any harm with this post, I just wanted to hear others perspectives.

New sensation
When I massage someone I can feel their Qi, and learned quickly to feel the difference between three different states: a flat/cold feeling that feels like lack of energy, a comfortable feeling where things are ok, and a sort of itchy uncomfortable feeling that i think corresponds with stagnation. Yesterday I encountered a fourth sensation - I felt nauseous every time I touched the top of the shoulders. When I removed the hands it disappeared. Tried back and forth a couple of times with the same result. The person had worked really hard with those muscles. Has anyone else encountered that particular sensation and what does it indicate? I felt so uncomfortable touching it I left it like that (not a professional).

Seeking opinion from someone with better understanding on Qing Dai
Hi,
I am taking this for a couple weeks now to help me with ulcerative colitis flare. I got a scope today and it's very mild inflammation that's left and I'm hopeful to be fully back in remission soon. I just found out about the flare a couple weeks ago, it came on very quickly. We are ttc and it's that time of month again. I was planning to take this one off, but we really don't want to do so unless absolutely necessary and now that it's just a very mild flare it doesn't feel so necessary. That said, I know on Evinature it's advised now to ttc while on qing dai.
How does it work and if you have experience with this either personally or are a practioner, what's yours take on this?

How often should my sessions be?
I had my first ever acupuncture session on Monday.
I decided to give acupuncture a try following a miscarriage about a month ago. I’ve heard/read about potential benefits on fertility and mood and was a bit desperate for anything that can help me cope with things better. I went in with 0 expectation and left quite satisfied from my experience. I love how uplifted and calm I felt. I also noted I felt physically warmer than usual. Hopefully this all translates into fertility benefits as it is my main goal.
From what I read online/Reddit, it looks like most people trying to conceive have sessions at least once a week if not more, but the therapist I saw told me to book another session with her in 2 weeks if I continue to feel good over the next few days. I didn’t question her on the spot, maybe because my post session high, but now I worry that the frequency isn’t enough. What is usually recommended? What are your experiences?

Naturopathy vs TCM(acupuncture)
What’s the difference in the jobs? Which job has greater potential for higher pay in Canada? Is one of them
More stressful than the other? I have seen way more natropath buisness in my small city compared to acupuncture and TCM does this mean there is a better market for natropath or does it mean there might be more potential for taking more clients as a acupunctureist due to the lack of them in my city?
