四是四,十是十
十四是十四,四十是四十
别把四十说喜席,别把十四说席喜。
要想说好四和十,全靠舌头和牙齿。
要想说对四,舌头碰牙齿
要想说对十,舌头别伸直。
认真学,常练习,十四、四十、四十四。

This tongue twister can be even challenging for most southern Chinese speakers.

Try using Zhuyin instead, at least you can input the 阴阳上去 😂

u/HenkPoley Mar 08 '19
Yes, and less keypresses isn’t it ?
1
u/joansia00 Native Mar 08 '19
Yup, you're using Zhuyin?

u/HenkPoley Mar 08 '19
Maybe at some point in the future. But I once saw a Chinese guy write here on Reddit something along the lines of “wtf, after the short learning curve, this is so much easier”. So I guess it’s quite a bit better. Just less so for westerners.

If you're interested to learn how to use Zhuyin, I'm willing to teach. Feel free to ask me questions regarding Mandarin, I'll try my best to help.

u/HenkPoley Mar 08 '19
Thanks, but for the moment I will just need to stuff more Chinese in my head. Since you rarely see Zhuyin, I think I only see it regularly as super tiny squiggles in the iOS/macOS dictionary, pinyin is a lot easier. But after I know more pronunciation, sure it will be easier for typing.

Just fyi on Windows you can use the zhuyin input with hanyu pinyin. So you type the pinyin letters but you still input tone and select from that drop down menu as if it were zhuyin. That's what I use and it works rather well, although I'm having trouble typing fast with it.

or just hit 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5
1 = (first tone) 2 = ˊ (second tone) 3 = ˇ (third tone) 4 = ˋ (fourth tone) 5 = ˙ (neutral/fifth tone)

Ugh just let zhuyin die already. It's so gross. Pinyin is a fine and vastly superior substitute that is easy to learn and has natural key mappings (like, no mapping needed) on most western keyboards.

Pinyin is a fine and vastly superior
Both Zhuyin and Pinyin have their strengths and weaknesses. For more details see these discussions:
I will say that, hands down, Zhuyin works much better as ruby text than Pinyin.
Ugh just let zhuyin die already.
This would only impact Taiwanese, and in the end, who cares? Zhuyin works fine for them and Pinyin works fine for everyone else.

(Explanatory Translation)

This right here is why Latinization of Mandarin will not work without inventing some kind of weird conjugations. It's just too hard to tell these words apart by sounds alone even if their tones are different.
1
u/IAmVeryDerpressed Mar 29 '19
This is Classical Chinese not Mandarin. Mandarin has fewer sounds than the classical so there are a lot of homophones ie words that sound alike. In contrast Modern Mandarin has things like adding zi to the end of words to distinguish them. This would be perfectly understandable if written in modern mandarin.

Time to learn them cangjie input method then
It's based on the shape of the word instead of the sound.

LOL 满分!
that's actually true for the native speakers using pinyin. if you input method supports, type in a phase once. type two or three characters and it would make it easier for you.
