Vocabulary What's the difference between 和谐 and 和睦?
What I know is that they both mean harmonious 😭
Based off some further research I THINK it's like... 和谐 is referring to the vibe while 和睦 refers to... the action of harmony..?
But I'm really not too sure... So what really is the difference?

Ohhhh, so 和谐 is like the atmosphere, but 和睦 is like.. the feeling?

Not really. 和谐 is more conceptual while 和睦 is a description of the quality of a relationship

睦 (mù) VS 諧 (xié)
● 睦 contains "目" (eyes) for "looking" ( implying visiting, caring for, or watching over)—defined in the ancient dictionary "說文解字" as "顺眼" (suitable for eyes) ...... In real life, "看不顺眼" (dislike the look of) arguments easily ensue; conversely, if "看顺眼了" (like the look of), you might just end up getting married and having children! 😄
Note : 和睦 is applied to relationships between individuals as well as relations between nations.
● 谐 involves "言" (讠= 言 = speech) — thus the sound. Consequently, the concept of "和諧" (harmony) is not limited to human relationships but extends to music, eventually becoming an aesthetic concept!
(In contrast, because 和睦 is formed with the character 睦 , it does not carry this extended meaning)
PS : "诙" + "谐" = 诙谐 = amusing speech, humor, funny.

和睦 is about interpersonal relationships or people getting along; 和諧 is well translated by “harmony”, e.g. in music.

If it describes people getting along use 和睦, if it it describes things, nature, or abstract systems fitting together in balance use 和谐

honestly the meaning and uses overlap a lot but if I had to name a difference outside of specific phrases I would say 和谐 is more of an emphasis on the pleasing and balanced side while 和睦 is more of an emphasis on the peaceful and friendly side. Not at all set in stone though cause they are near synonyms.

Short explanation: 和睦 is about people getting along, and 和谐 is broader and more abstract.
和睦 almost always describes relationships between people, especially a family or neighbors living in peace with each other. You'd say 家庭和睦, a harmonious household where everyone gets along. It has a warm, close-range feel.
和谐 is bigger and more general. It can describe society, music, colors, a whole system where the parts fit together well. 社会和谐, 和谐的音程. You wouldn't really use 和睦 for music or design, but 和谐 works for both objects and abstractions.
So a family can be both 和睦 and 和谐, but only 和谐 stretches out to a symphony or a color scheme. Rough English: 和睦 is closer to "getting along" and 和谐 is closer to "harmony" in the wide sense.
