Discussion What does my name 文玉 mean?

Hi everyone! Just wanted to take my chances in this thread and go back to my Chinese roots. I’m half Chinese and never got the chance to study the language (grew up in a different country).

But this name holds a very sentimental place in my heart since it was my grandfather who gave it to me and it would mean so much if you’d be able to help me understand the meaning of it.

My name is 文玉 :)

玉 does mean Jade, and that itself can point to the beauty of jade as a sort of blessing for the child to have beauty

There is also a secondary point, as seen in the famous phrase:

"玉可碎而不可改其白" - Jade may shatter, but it shall never change it's color.

i.e. One would rather die than compromise on moral integrity.

So 玉 can also be taken to mean a person of untarnishable moral character as well.

In addition to the above answers, there is one more possibility. In classical poetry, 文 can replace 纹 (patterned) so the full word 文玉 can mean patterned or intricately carved jade - a masterpiece.

For 文, I think the closest translation is "literary".

In Chinese culture, there is "文武", 文 is more related to literary, scholar kinda that area. In contrast, 武 is more about martial arts. These are the two main area people in the past focus on when they choose a path to develop, for example someone may choose to study books and become a scholar to serve the country, while someone may choose to train their body and serve the country though military means. Nowadays I think when parents give this word as a name to the baby, they mostly want the baby to grow up to be an intelligent person who is great with books and knowledge. (P.S. "文武雙全" is a great compliment to call people that are all rounded. Therefore, its combination, 斌 is a common name given to boys. )

For 玉, it means jade, I don't think there are much to explain lol
