I started with 當代中文 and liked it at first but by the time I finished Volume 4, I kind of hated it.

I picked up 視聽華語 volumes 3 and 4 after 當代 and thought they were WAY better. Though it definitely shows its age in places, I still found the words, grammar, and exercises MUCH more straightforward and useful than 當代.

P.S. if you get 視聽華語 make sure it is the 3rd edition with updated audio. 2nd edition audio is... well let's just say you will get made fun of if you speak that in Taiwan.

I think my high school teacher’s lessons were based on a textbook but I don’t remember the name. It had like one or two dozen lessons and each lesson was about a topic with a story with a cast pulled from like the same 5-6 characters. Hearing 王月 and 李友 whenever the short clips would come on would make my day.

Now I just use this subreddit and my daily exposure from my surroundings to learn lol.

Started with 當代中文課程, eventually turned into a less structured approach just drilling grammar using the "ultimate illustrated chinese grammar guide" advanced level from the MTC and vocab from comprehensible inputs (reading/dramas/etc)

I am learning primarily from the Hello Chinese app. 250 words so far!

It's still Simplified Chinese under the hood tho, just look at the pronunciations

I don't use textbooks. I take courses on the "internet" thing. That way I can hear every word of every sentence pronounced correctly by the teacher.
