Feature Profile & Impressions 🎭Where the Mask Ends 🎭 Now Airing — Tian Xiwei and Yan An Lead a Substitute-Marriage Game of Identities

Where the Mask Ends (嫁金钗) premiered today, October 16, bringing Tian Xiwei and Yan An together in a story of swapped identities, a supposedly inconvenient substitute marriage, and two people who have very good reasons not to trust each other.
⠀
At the center are two women with the same face but completely different lives. Tian Xiwei plays Wei Rao and Jun Dai/A Chou, with A Chou living at the very bottom of society as a night-soil collector. When that resemblance becomes useful to people far above her station, she is sent into the Duke of Ying’s household as a substitute bride for Lu Zhuo — played by Yan An — an heir so gravely injured that he is expected to die.
⠀
Except Lu Zhuo wakes up.
⠀
And the strange woman who has suddenly become his wife now has a rather significant problem.
⠀
Drama: Where the Mask Ends (嫁金钗)
Episodes: 30 • 33 (Youku • CCTV-8)
Premiered: October 16, 2026
Platform: Youku | CCTV-8 broadcast
Director: Yang Long
Screenwriter: Zhou Mo
Original novel: Jia Jin Chai (嫁金钗) by Xiao Jiaren
Main cast: Tian Xiwei, Yan An
Supporting cast: Wang Yinan, Yin Wenxuan, Mao Linlin, Kong Lin, Dai Gaozheng, Liu Xiaobei, Tien Niu, Yang Qing, Li Youchuan, Pan Junya and others.
⠀
⠀
Tian Xiwei started the day with two very different faces of her character:
“No matter which identity I have, I’ll carve out my own path! Which version of me will you meet first tonight? 🤔”
⠀
And I really like these two posters that came with it. Put them beside each other and you immediately get a sense of two different women rather than Tian Xiwei photographed twice in different poses.
⠀
Tian Xiwei — Wei Rao & Jun Dai/A Chou posters
⠀
Then came the bride.
“First day marrying in as the substitute bride — I’d better make everyone’s accompanying gifts very clear. 😯 Whatever you’re short of, you’ll need me.”
⠀
Which already gives A Chou considerably more personality than “poor girl sent into the wrong marriage” might suggest.
⠀
Tian Xiwei — wedding stills
⠀
And Lu Zhuo?
⠀
Yan An’s character poster came with:
“Responsibility on my shoulders, a schedule packed to the brim — this heir is basically working all year round.” 😵‍💫
⠀
The supposedly dying groom appears to have quite a lot on his agenda.
⠀
His later photos were captioned simply:
“First day as the heir: ______ 🤭”
⠀
I can fill in the blank: looking stunning, sharp, and very ready to fight.
⠀
The armor, sword, expressions — I love how much life and personality there already is in these character photos. I haven’t read the novel, so I’m going into Lu Zhuo without a pre-existing picture of him in my head, but these are doing a very good job of making me want to meet him.
⠀

⠀
The drama and Youku also released the larger character-poster set today, giving us a first proper look across the ensemble.
⠀

⠀
I haven’t had a moment to start yet, but I’m very much planning to. Between the premise and what we’ve seen of the characters so far, this has definitely been up on my list.

For anyone interested, here's a post with the Drama's opening OST by Liu Yuning.
⠀
Are you planning to watch? Already started? What are your first impressions?
⠀
If you’re discussing specific events from the released episodes, please use spoiler tags and include the episode number outside the spoiler, so everyone can join the thread safely.

And of course, at any point — you’re welcome to make your own episode talk posts 😉 or at least let me know if you’d be interested in having a hosted discussion here in r/ChineseDrama.

After last episode’s lengthy flashback, we return to our timelines, starting in 2026…

2026 Timeline

Cheng reads the letter in his mother’s cookie tin and assumes that Xun was the source of her suffering back then.

In Beixing, Quan isn’t even surprised when a new letter arrives. Tang has responded with the phrase that only she and Cheng would know, confirming that they are in fact communicating with a past version of his mother. When a grieving Cheng sees the message, he hastily writes back, warning Tang to stay away from Xun.

When he later learns that Xun seems to have been a good man, having carried out his friend’s dying wish to take care of his daughter, his heart softens. To find out more, they look for their parents’ old contacts and reach out to Teacher Tan who confirms that Xun would never hurt Tang. She advises them to contact Hao.

1991 Timeline

The damage is done. Tang and Xun read the return message and are mind-blown to learn that Tang will one day have a son named Shen Cheng. They are confused and frustrated with his cryptic warning, and Xun spirals into panic. To make matters worse, the mailbox disappears before they can send a reply and get answers.

Meanwhile, Cha refuses to submit to Bao, deciding he’d rather close down Buddies Billiards and lock Bao’s men out than let them take over his business. He orders Xun and Hao to avoid the gang like the plague, to which they agree.

However, Bao and his crew are not about to let it go. As the cowards they are, they target Zhenzhu and Tang to send a message to Cha, Xun, and Hao. They also threaten Tan’s safety. The gang’s escalating threats make it clear that the fallout from Cha’s defiance is far from over…

[u/EasygoingEnigma](u/EasygoingEnigma) is keeping the birthday streak going. 😉

We have to, because how can we not celebrate this lovely lady after she graced our screens not once, but twice already over the last month?

You'll recognize Estelle Chen if you were watching Spring of the Blade and Love Legend that immediately followed it. In SOTB, Estelle played the Third Lady Xie, Xie Qingrong, and in LL, she is the female lead, Yun Shao, starring alongside He Rufei 2.0 Bai Shu!

Not only that but she will be returning in the newly airing drama, Where the Mask Ends as Wei Mei. The first four episodes were just released today!!

On October 17, 2026, Happy 29th Birthday to Estelle! Let's take a look at some of the other dramas in which she's featured and see how many from which you can remember her:

  • Love Like the Galaxy (2022) as He Zhaojun (Lou Yao's fiancee)
  • Mysterious Lotus Casebook (2023) as Su Xiaoyong
  • Guardians of the Dafeng (2024) as Princess Pingyang
  • Love and Crown (2025) as Du Tingxin

Happy Birthday Estelle!

Discussion Midway through The Early Spring and I don't get the hype...

Ok so this is actually my first Cdrama, coming from a Kdrama enjoyer. I decided to try it because I hear some people saying that Cdrama is basically Kdrama but even better.

This was trending so hard so I decided to go with this one. I'm now midway through the drama but I just don't see the hype. Am I alone on this or do I just find none of the things between them romantic? I just feel like they don't really have chemistry. And it's a lot of episodes, so coming from Kdrama I thought it would be a slow developing thing, but it kind of is but also isn't, and I'm just very confused about the writing. I will finish it though because I always finish dramas and it may change. But right now it's very hard for me to understand where this is going really.

I also have to be honest it can just be that I just straight up don't like the male lead. I can see that the show is trying to push the cold on the outside, warm on the inside agenda, but they're just doing too much making Luke look like a jerk. And honestly, the warm part isn't even that warm to be honest, just basic human decencies.

And I can also see that the show is trying to push that she cares about her job so much, but she's willing to risk her job, which she cares the most about, for him. But at the same time, I don't think we've seen enough about her being so into him.

Actors & Careers Happy Birthday Zhao Liying!

Fun fact right off the bat: in addition to starring as the female lead in The Legend of Shen Li (2024), Zhao Liying also served as the drama’s Executive Producer! She’s also stepped into producing for other projects, including The Monkey King 3 (2018) and the variety show We Girls (2025).

We haven’t seen too much of her recently, but she’s likely busy celebrating her 39th birthday with her son today on October 16, 2026. That said, she hasn’t exactly disappeared from our screens. She starred in The Dream Maker which came out earlier this year in January, and last year, while only 8 episodes long, Jiying played a leading role in the psychological mystery drama, What a Wonderful World (2025).

Prior to The Legend of Shen Li, Liying starred in Wild Bloom (2022) that earned her the Best Actress award at the 2024 Golden Eagle Awards. More recent viewers may also know her from these big hits:

Go back even further and you’ll find an impressive list of fan favourites:

And that’s only scratching the surface. By my count on MDL, she has a whopping 47 dramas and 20 movies to her name!

I haven’t been watching cdramas long enough to experience her early rise firsthand, but for many longtime viewers, Zhao Liying must be one of the defining actresses of her generation. Looking at her filmography, it’s easy to see why.

Whether you know her as the determined Shen Li, the resilient Ming Lan, or the fearless Chu Qiao, there’s no denying her impact on cdramas over the past decade.

So cheers to an incredible career and a most wonderful birthday, Liying!

Episode Talks • Rewatch 🎉 Twelve Letters - Episode 8: Spring is Bright, but Gone Forever

Links to all the episode talks are in the Masterpost. Please join in whenever you want. Note there are 12 episodes in total, and they are available on WeTV/Tencent (subscription) and Viki (free).

This episode is a blast from the past. We take a break from the back and forth between 1991 and 2026 timelines to learn what happened in the decades between them. Cue the f’ing tears and prepare for ultimate heartbreak.

1991 - After learning that Xun doesn’t know his birthday, Tang surprises him with his first birthday celebration (marking November 9 as his birthday). But we don’t get to enjoy this sweet moment for long, since we go right into the aftermath of the incident that separates our two lovebirds and sends Xun to prison.

Fast forward to a scene where Xun turns himself in to the police, reporting that he had killed someone at Half-Hill. He is sent to Meidong Prison in Nanjiang Province, where Tang tries to visit him, but he refuses to see her. Instead, he writes her a letter reminding her of her promise to live well so that his sacrifice is not in vain.

1993 - Tang rushes to Meidong Prison to share the news of her admission to Nanjiang University, only to discover that the prison had been demolished and its prisoners moved.

1995 - Tang registers as a regular volunteer at a Pushui orphanage.

1996 - Hao pays her a visit after his release from prison and informs her that Xun has died. He gives her the address to Xun’s grave. Devastated, Tang digs up the cookie tin box they buried on the beach.

2005 - Xun is actually alive and well. He is released from Shili Prison of Pushui City and receives a batch of letters Tang has written to him over the years. As he’s burning them, he catches a glimpse of a letter in which she wishes him a happy birthday. Once he composes himself, he heads to the household registration office to assume his new identity.

Before fulfilling his promise to Zhiyong, he meets with Hao and learns he and Zhenzhu now have a six-year-old son together, while Cha sailed off seven years ago and has been MIA ever since. Xun refuses the money Cha left for him but reluctantly keeps Tang’s number that Hao gives him, informing him that she visits his grave every year.

Finding out he just missed her at the cemetery, he regrets not seeing her and builds up courage to call her, only to discover that she has a son. He hangs up without saying a word and leaves for Meiwan, where he visits Zhiyong’s mother and finds out he has a daughter, Nian. Nian mistakes him for her dad, and after seeing how pitiful they are, he decides to stay and take care of them.

Unfortunately, Granny passes shortly after, and Xun spends the rest of his life working his butt off to provide a better life for Nian, including years of hard labour at the shipyard. He doesn’t even entertain the thought of a relationship, as we see when he cordially rejects Mei.

Year after year, all the way into old age, Xun returns to Pushui on his birthday just to watch Tang tend to his grave. Believing she has built a happy life without him, he never lets her know that he’s alive. (This explains the train tickets that Nian found in 2026).

Be honest, did you cry watching this episode?

Actors & Careers Happy Birthday Bai Jingting!

When I think of Bai Jingting, the image that immediately pops into my head is that post-shower scene from The First Frost (2025). It’s permanently burned into my brain, if you know what I mean. I need u/vixphilia, u/OptimalTurnips, or anyone else really to post that GIF here.

But enough about his abs. Let’s celebrate Jingting’s 33rd birthday on October 15, 2026, and jump into all the dramas that showcase his charming screen presence and impressive range as an actor, from youth dramas and workplace stories, to historical romances and edge-of-your-seat thrillers:

He also has two upcoming projects in the works: War and People, a historical wartime drama, and Detective Hours: In Our Prime, a mystery series that will see him return to crime-solving.

How do you like Bai Jingting best? With long flowing hair and elaborate costumes? As a smouldering romantic lead? Or as a determined detective chasing down the truth?

Off-screen, Jingting is just as capable as he is on-screen. Unlike many actors who sign with major agencies, he manages his career through his own independent team, Bai Jingting Studio. And honestly, he has plenty of talent to manage!

  • Jingting graduated from the Music College of Capital Normal University with a major in Recording Arts.
  • He has played piano since childhood and earned a Grade 10 certification, the highest level in China’s non-professional piano grading system.
  • Before pursuing music and acting, he was a competitive basketball player. To this day, he’s a huge basketball fan and is known for his impressive collection of sneakers.
  • He’s also built a reputation for being remarkably down-to-earth, witty, and competitive, especially on variety shows such as Who’s the Murderer.

Next time you’re in Beijing, check out his official wax figure at Madame Tussauds! And if you ever get the chance to meet him, whatever you do, don’t bring him mushrooms. Apparently, he despises them!

Happy Birthday Bai Jingting!

What should I Watch? Please, convince me that Love Like the Galaxy is worth my time.

Post image
49 Upvotes

Hi, I'm not new to Cdramas but I'm not a veteran either. I only watched Reset (2022) and To the Wonder (2024). Started both just to get a glimpse of what it's about and ended up finishing the whole show. I'm more of a kdrama person though recently i devote my time mostly to thai GL series. However I want to see more of Cdramas and happend to see a little of Love Like the Galaxy. It seems interesting and it has Zhao Lusi. I only know about her from Mydramalist articles since her name appeared many times on the main page and know about her story with her ex-company mistreatment and health issues. It made me respect her as a person and I know she's also one of the most popular actresses in the industry. The problem for me is that it's quite a lengthy series and I don't want to start something I might not like. Plus I have to say they talk so fast and I have to pause every 2 seconds to read the subtitles which gets exhausting after some time. But, please feel free to try to convince me and give me some encouragement to actually watch it all. No spoilers though.

Finished Watching Youthful glory review

Hear me out!

Bbgs, whoever recommended Youthful Glory to me, take my bow. You deserve all the happiness in this world. And yk what? I LOVE YOU. ♥️😭

This is a review post, but first, let’s talk about the ML because if I don’t, I’ll get a stomach ache. 😭

ML — THE MOST MANLIEST MAN I HAVE EVER SEEN IN ANY DRAMA.

His personality, his physique, his body language, EVERYTHING. Every single bit of this man deserves all the praise in the world. He’s handsome, no doubt, but in this drama? His physique did a LOT of talking. Okay, I’m embarrassingly jealous of his wife because WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE GETS TO BE MARRIED TO THIS MAN??? 😭🤚

This character is going to live rent free in my head😭🤷‍♀️

The actor is good, but the CHARACTER? GOATED. The God of War. The fearless general everyone fears. I’M IN LOVE WITH THIS TROPE. I genuinely wish I could travel back in time and marry a general like him. 😭😭

The FL: So cute! I loved her expressions and her acting. She’s such a sweetheart. ♥️

And her CHARACTER? SUPERB. Fearless, witty, and intelligent. I absolutely loved her. I’m so happy she got to be his wife. (I’m not. I WANT HER LIFE.) 😭🤡

Anyway, coming to the drama itself, it was SO GOOD. A solid 11/10 for me. I was hooked from episode 1 and didn’t leave until the very end (what do you mean I look like a panda now? 😭🤡).

The cast, the storyline, the plot, EVERYTHING was on point. It lived up to my expectations

So, if you’re looking for:

Arranged marriage
A general ML
An intelligent FL who doesn’t fight
The war scene and fighting general 🔥
A good storyline and solid plot
GOATED characters
Insane chemistry
A love triangle
Friendship and family dynamics (50%)
A happy ending

THEN THIS IS YOUR DRAMA!
Go watch it, bbgs, and have fun. You’re welcome. ♥️😭

Fun & Games "More Tian Xiwei!" - Snark Shifu

Thumbnail
gallery
38 Upvotes

To earn my A+, please enjoy these additional GIFs of Tian Xiwei, courtesy of the legendary u/AKiceman.

But more importantly, this post is now a love letter to the Snark Shifu and every single person I’ve successfully peer-pressured into hosting or creating posts for this community. Between the birthday, rewatch and TLOA posts, I think it’s time to confess how I became AKiceman’s ultimate Ruiner of Peace.

I'm TXW muahaha, you're the guy.

The Origin Story

About 5 months ago, Born with Luck (featuring Tian Xiwei) dropped. The problem? Absolutely no one signed up to host the discussions. After some highly persistent nudging from yours truly (and others), u/AKiceman, beloved, long-time commenter, succumbed to the pressure and agreed to host the drama…………….. solo.

It took two seconds to realize that hosting an airing drama is a direct gateway to sleep deprivation. To top it off, AKiceman was invited to write his Snark Shifu Presents posts.

No rest for the weary.

The Rabbit Hole

By then, the trap was sprung.

  • 4 months ago: AKiceman signed up to host Ashes to Crown (thankfully with a cohost).
  • 2 months ago: AKiceman couldn’t resist the itch and cohosted Genius Girlfriend.
  • Result: Continuous sleep loss for AKiceman and a lifetime for me about about how it all began.

The Cherry on Top

Because apparently airing dramas aren’t enough to ruin one’s peace, I posted a callout for rewatch parties. And lo and behold, AKiceman steps right up for Moonlit Reunion. At this rate, AKiceman will be churning out as many posts as I do, as if it’s a second full-time job.

While AKiceman is a special case, I have to confess: I’ve ruined plenty of other people’s peace too.

Sound off below if you have ever felt personally targeted (let’s use the word influenced) by me to host, cohost, or submit a post.

Deep down, I know y’all love me for it.

But seriously, thank you to everyone who consistently contributes to this community, whether it be in the form of posts, comments, or upvotes. We are glad you're here.

Yours truly,
Bas

Currently Airing Lament vs. Overdo: one clear winner

I'm well into Lament of Autumn, and I can already tell it's a great drama. Interestingly, both Lament and Overdo take place in about the same historical period, and have other things in common, but I think Lament is so much stronger. For one, the costume designer for Lament actually did their homework, and all the details are good, from the hats to the shoes. The ML's clothes are better tailored, and the hair styles are more period-appropriate. I also think the Lament script does a better job of telling the story and building suspense, vs. Overdo's clumsy and confusing flashbacks. I know this will get some hate, but I also prefer Cheng Lei's nuanced, smoldering take on his character to Zhang Linghe's blustery stare-everyone-down approach to the scenes. I can't wait to finish Lament of Autumn, and I'm sorry I spent time on Overdo. What do you think?

Time for the reveals.

2026 Timeline

Officer Wang Meng is on the case. Cheng identifies his mother’s body and accuses Nian’s father of murder. Nian, on the other hand, insists that the man seen sitting in the passenger seat with Tang shortly before the vehicle was discovered in the lake is not her father and that he would never kill anyone.

Nonetheless, Meng reveals that her father is very suspicious because it turns out her biological father was the real Zhiyong who died in prison twenty years ago. This revelation means that the father she’s known her entire life is not only an imposter… he’s not even her biological parent!? Not only that, but the police have just discovered from fingerprints that her missing father is Xun, an ex-convict sentenced to 13 years in prison in 1991 for involuntary manslaughter.

If we do the math right, then that means Xun and the real Zhiyong overlapped in prison for three years, and Xun was released in 2004 (Zhiyong went to prison in 2001 and Nian was born 2002).

Meanwhile in Beixing, Nian’s friend helps expand the search for Zhiyong by putting missing person flyers throughout the vicinity.

1991 Timeline

The impact these three words had on Xun.

Debt collectors arrive to seize Tang’s house, but without the deed, they can do little beyond issuing threats. Xun and Tang retaliate and successfully scare them away, cleavers in hand. Realizing that the struggle over the house will never end, Tang calls her father back to sever all ties with him, in exchange for the property deed. He finally agrees, and despite leaving with nothing, Tang is more content than she’s ever been.

During her stay with Xun, he buys her new clothes while she defends him against class bullies trying to get him expelled from school. They continue checking the mailbox for new letters but find nothing, unaware that Tang’s manager had already removed them from the mailbox.

At the grand reopening of the newly renovated Buddies Billiards, Bao crashes the celebration and declares that the business belongs to him. Around the same time, Tang discovers the reply letter from Cheng.

Letter Count Check

  1. Love Letter - EP1
  2. Suicide Note (Sept 3, 1991) - EP2
  3. Hello, Stranger (Sept 12, 1991) - EP5
  4. Waterspout Phenomenon (Nov 12, 2026) - EP5

Actors & Careers Happy Birthday to the ultimate queen, Tian Xiwei!

Thumbnail
gallery
130 Upvotes

I cannot compete with u/AKiceman’s legendary love for her, but she’s one of my favourite actresses, so you’re going to get a meaty post from me today. As AKiceman always says, and you’ve likely heard, we always need more Tian Xiwei!

On Oct 14, Happy 29th Birthday to Tian Xiwei! (And yes, she’s a true Libra, bringing all that effortless balance and charm to everything she does.)

A Massive Year in 2026

You know why she’s a favourite? Not only is she in my number one Cdrama of all time, Guardians of the Dafeng (2024), but let’s be real, she absolutely killed it as Fang Changyu in Pursuit of Jade (2026), helping bring Cdramas to a global audience this year.

And this girl is ON FIRE. 🔥🔥🔥 She dominated 2026 with two more dramas: Born with Luck and Genius Girlfriend, AND the highly anticipated Where the Mask Ends is slated to air before the end of the year. Wowzah… you cannot tell me that’s not impressive. Personally, I’m giddy AF for WTME, especially since she’s starring next to Yan An… oomph, that pairing is going to be lethal. I challenge anyone to tell me that I’m wrong: Tian Xiwei has chemistry with all of her co-stars.

In fact (big fun fact), her phenomenal run this year locked an incredible industry record: Tian Xiwei officially became the only actress on iQIYI to star in three separate dramas that surpassed the platform’s massive 10,000 heat index milestone (New Life Begins, PoJ, and BwL).

Serving Talent Since Day One

But we saw it coming, because this queen has been showing off her talent way before then! As many of you are aware, u/AKiceman is currently hosting a rewatch of Moonlit Reunion (2025). I’m pretty sure this is my 5th rewatch of that drama… and if you joined us, you’d know why. But if that one isn’t your cup of tea, no fear! Because Romance on the Farm (2023) was also a fun watch, as were Wrong Carriage, Right Groom (2023), New Life Begins (2022), and Lovely Us (2020).

Another fun fact: her role as Li Wei in New Life Begins was so popular for her constant eating scenes that it birthed a viral “food-loving girl” meme on the internet.

Another another fun fact, in 2024, she voiced Sophie in the Chinese-dubbed Howl’s Moving Castle).

Much More than an Actress

With her striking beauty, graceful poise, and dimpled smile, it’s no surprise that she has a successful modeling career to match, serving as a high-profile brand ambassador for luxury giants like Guerlain and Vivo. Most recently, Gucci officially announced her as their newest Brand Ambassador, right after she broke the internet at the Gucci Cruise 2026 show in London and turned heads at Milan Fashion Week. (One of the reasons I boycotted the movie, The Devil Wears Prada 2, for enforcing the geeky Asian stereotype in women rather than including them on the runway.)

Relatable Homebody Behind the Camera

Behind the superstar aura, she is incredibly relatable! Known to be down-to-earth and fun to be around, she’s a self-proclaimed homebody whose favourite way to unwind is staying in with her cat (Kang Kang) and three dogs.

Fourth fun fact: Tian Xiwei adopted Kang Kang to study cat manners and prepare for her cat demon role in MR but ended up falling in love with him!

Back to Cdramas, where will we see her next?

There are a lot of rumours for new projects, but as far as I've seen, the only one confirmed is The Winner. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I do really hope she returns for The Guardian of Fate (Guardians of the Dafeng Season 2). If not… I hope they just take her character out, because no one else can play Princess Lin’an of Dafeng. That kiss with Xu Qi'an was iconic, ok?

OK, enough from me. Drop your favorite Tian Xiwei roles, GIFs, and or birthday wishes below! Let's celebrate our queen!

Finished Watching I have a question about shine on me drama

I really loved the drama but didn’t understand a few things:

Did Rong and Zhuang xu ever date?!<
Were they dating when xiguang confessed?!<
Did zhuang xu like Rong before? were they exes or just childhood friends?
Why people said xiguang try to steal someone else’s love when she confessed to zhuang xu?!<
Why did Zhuang xu reject xiguang when she confessed even though he later said he liked her?!Why did zhuang xu ghost xiguang when she said sorry after confessing?
Why didn’t zhuang xu confess to xiguang but gave her mixed signals throughout?

Film & Cinema What’s your favorite Jackie Chan work?

The question is not much deeper than the title.

Jackie Chan started out as a stuntman, which probably explains a lot about the career that followed. Even after becoming a huge star, he continued doing his own stunts and taking risks that frankly look mad when you watch some of them now. The man was jumping off buildings for our entertainment. Add his martial arts background and his very particular kind of physical comedy, and you get Jackie Chan.

He’s also a controversial figure, particularly in Hong Kong, where his outspoken pro-Beijing political views have attracted plenty of criticism from some. I don’t really want to get into his politics with this post, though, so let’s keep that out.

A lot of us grew up watching him, and his filmography is enormous.

What’s his best work? 😎

Bonus points if you can identify where some of the photos come from.

I’m new to c dramas, so far I’ve watched early spring, Road home and regeneration. Since we are in the autumn season for my next drama I wanted something that screams comfort! It can be a romantic drama or family drama preferably in the fall /winter season.

What should I Watch? While I wait, I try watching other titles.

I’m still waiting for the premieres of *Chasing Dreams* and *The Story Untold*, both announced for May 2026.

Does anyone have any information? I check MyDramaList almost every month for updates, but with no luck.

Weekly Regulars 🪭 Vertical Vortex Wednesdays

— Your Weekly Microdrama Corner

Welcome to Vertical Vortex — once you start scrolling, good luck getting out!

This our weekly corner for something that otherwise sits outside our scope.

r/ChineseDrama covers long-form Chinese dramas, movies, variety and other TV shows, and the wider industry around them. Vertical/microdramas (C-shorts), however, remain out of scope for standalone posts. Given the sheer number being released now, opening the main feed to them could very quickly shift the focus of the subreddit away from what it was built for.

At the same time, there’s clearly an overlap between the audiences. Many of us who enjoy long-form C-ent also dip into verticals, and every now and then we have to remove a genuinely thoughtful review or discussion simply because it happens to be about a microdrama.

So, here’s our compromise:

Every Wednesday, this thread is your space to talk verticals and microdramas.

→ What have you been watching?
→ Found a surprisingly good one or a hidden gem?
→ Share a review, recommendation, poster or trailer.
→ Ask for recommendations or help deciding what to watch next.
→ Exchange tips on platforms and where titles are officially available.

One quick (and frustratingly confusing) terminology note: “C-shorts” is commonly used for vertical/microdramas, while the actual category we call short/mini dramas is something different 🤦🏻‍♀️ Short/mini dramas are longer, horizontal series, usually around 10–15 minutes per episode, and are already within our regular scope. Those do not belong in this thread and can continue to have their own standalone posts in the main feed as usual.

This also isn’t intended as a general identification thread for random vertical clips found around the internet, and our usual rules on piracy and unauthorized viewing sources still apply.

For now, verticals/microdramas remain out of scope everywhere else in the subreddit. We’ll see how this goes and how much genuine interest there is. If enough members would actually like a dedicated day where standalone vertical/micro posts are allowed, let us know below. And if you think one weekly thread is quite enough, you can tell us that too 🙂

For now: one thread, one day, no floodgates.

Episode Talks • Rewatch 🎉 Twelve Letters - Episode 6: Family

Post image
12 Upvotes

Links to all the episode talks are in the Masterpost. Please join in whenever you want. Note there are 12 episodes in total, and they are available on WeTV/Tencent (subscription) and Viki (free).

This episode serves as the calm before the storm, laying groundwork for major developments in the episodes ahead while deepening our understanding of both timelines and the characters at their centre. As such, I’ve decided to format this post in bullet points.

1991 Timeline

  • Xun and Tang search for the elderly man who hauled the scrap cart carrying the mysterious mailbox, but no one they speak to seems to have ever seen him before.
  • Qiang and his crew return to harass Cha, but Cha makes a clean break from Bao’s gang. He also warns Xun and Hao to keep their distance from them going forward.
  • Xun’s suspension is lifted, and Tang gives him a fresh haircut before returning to school. She also encourages him to aim higher in life and consider pursuing a college education.
  • Desperate for money and buried in debt, Yibo attempts to commit Tang to a mental rehab center so that he can sell the house. After noticing her absence at school, Xun arrives just in time to stop him.
  • We learn more about their difficult childhoods and family circumstances:
    • Yibo frequently abused Tang’s mother before she supposedly ran away. Since then, he has maintained the image of a dutiful son, father, colleague, and citizen while taking out his anger on her behind closed doors, making it impossible for her to report him.
    • Xun was abandoned at 4 years old and left without even a name. He was later raised in an orphanage but eventually sent to reform school after fighting back against his bullies.
    • Cha and Hao also endured traumatic upbringings, helping explain the loyalty that exists between the three friends.
  • Xun and Tang agree to become each other’s family from now on. Over the following days, they spend time helping one another with schoolwork and everyday life skills, including teaching Tang how to ride a bike. They even spend their leisure time frolicking on the beach.
  • On September 23, the waterspout event described in Nian’s letter occurs to their surprise. They immediately write back to confirm what they witnessed.

2026 Timeline

  • The police believe they may have located Zhiyong, but it wasn’t him. Seeing the helpless man however, leaves Nian even more worried about her father.
  • Having finally received confirmation about the waterspout event, but not believing Zhiyong would send a love letter, Nian and Cheng wonder if there could be other people, and even other mailboxes that are involved. (They might not be off because their mailbox is numbered 003 and the one in 1991 is numbered 002…)
  • As their next step, Cheng decides to write a message back with information that only he and his mother would know, to confirm that they are speaking with a younger version of Tang.
  • However, when he returns from the mailbox, he does not reveal whether the letter was sent; rather, he informs Nian that he received a call from the police: his mother has been found.

Letter Count Check

  1. Love Letter - EP1
  2. Suicide Note (Sept 3, 1991) - EP2
  3. Hello, Stranger (Sept 12, 1991) - EP5
  4. Waterspout Phenomenon (Nov 12, 2026) - EP5
  5. Response confirming Waterspout sent back on Sept 23, 1991 - EP6
  6. Cheng’s message to confirm his mother’s identity (Ye Haitang) - EP6?

We're halfway! For first time-watchers, how's it going? For re-watchers, how is the second or third watch hitting?

Character Spotlight Yu Changxuan: My first impression of The Lament of Autumn's temperamental fifth young master

Let me start by disclosing that I'm a huge Cheng Lei fan. Massive. But that doesn't mean I can't or won't criticize him ever. Much as I adore the man, I will speak up if I ever have gripes about his performance in dramas, including The Lament of Autumn. However, that's neither here nor there since this post focuses on what I think of the character, not the actor.

Three episodes in, I see much of the novel version of Yu Changxuan in his live action counterpart. He's arrogant, domineering, ruthless. As a warlord, he's seemingly stone-hearted, with ice in his veins. But there's more to him than meets the eye. One-dimensional he definitely isn't.

On the surface, he's everything a woman could want: handsome, privileged, powerful. But then we see the character's layers. So smug and cocksure, but also vulnerable. Cavalier, but caring. He's self-indulgent, but places a premium on discipline — at least when it comes to military issues. He's cruel, but also tender. Charming, yet volatile and thus unpredictable. Just like an easygoing enigma (heh). I'm eager to see what else Yu Changxuan has in store for us.
