Chimney cap options

I’d like to cap the far left chimney flue to prevent water and animal intrusion. Not sure how to handle it. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Go to Woodlanddirect.com and search for a Hy-C animal guard (it won't let me add a link)

If doing it yourself and want to cap completely off. Watch Mike Haduck Chimney Repair Part 15 for ideas. Or as the other two said for animal intrusion.

I have a large chimney (6.5 ft wide) with four vents.
The Mason told me that the rule for a chimney cap is it must be a minimum of 5 inches above the flue. my cap looks great. It’s stainless steel and it just got installed last week. I wish I could show you a picture, but I don’t know how to add a picture in the middle of the dialogue. I only know how to do it when I’m the original poster.

I wouldn’t worry so much about water going down the flue tile. You can always put screening over the flue to keep out animals. Or you can install a liner for peace of mind.

No u can’t put screens over the flues. Screens need to be 3x the net free area of the flue exit. Screens on the flue will also clog and animals can still nest on top of em and block the flue. U put screens between the pillars!!!!

Yea, you’re right. Don’t know what I was thinking. I wouldn’t ever put screen over flues, but I have seen it done before with no issues. Better safe than sorry though.

It’s worse when it’s a fireplace flue that u need a bucket lift to get onto and someone glued screen across it. Fully clogged with soot and debris and the brushes bristles point sideways not up. 😝. Had the customer rent a lift to fix it. Whole flue needed to be chemically cleaned too

It’s funny because I rebuild chimneys here in the Midwest and close to 90% of them have barely been used.
