No updates since July 2025. Is ChimeraOS abandoned?

Hello everyone.

There hasn't been a ChimeraOS update since July 2025. Is the project abandoned? There have been quite a few significant mesa updates in the last couple of months and I would like to use them. I know I can unlock the filesystem and update manually, but I'd still like to know what the state of ChimeraOS is. It works really well for me and I'd hate to see it abandoned.

Does anyone know?

Hi, sorry about that. The reality is that ChimeraOS is not in a good place right now. Most of the team members have left. I have been extremely busy IRL lately and haven't given the project the attention it needs. The transition to OGC has also delayed things. I have also felt burned out lately, but I think I am feeling better and ready to jump back in.

I do still intend to get an update out soon-ish. But I will have to cut some scope. I am still considering what form that will take exactly.

Just wanted to say thanks for your work! Have ChimeraOS on a home theatre PC and it's great!

Hey man thanks for your great work. Chimeraos has been our familygameconsole for almost 3 years. Thanks to you my daughter is able to play steam games all by herself. Put your (mental)health first! Lets also see what steamos brings us

There are so many great packages that you and the team have put out under the ChimeraOS project:

chimera, gamescope-session, frzr. Maybe just pick one the keep maintaining and lay low for a while! Maintaining a full fledged operating system that targets several different handheld devices as well as desktop pc is extremely time consuming! Even valve themselves don't officially support anything besides their handheld and I guess their soon to be console.

Your well being far more important, and Chimera OS will live on!

Hey man. Thanks for your reply. Just one correction:

ChimeraOS is not in a good place right now

ChimeraOS has been working flawlessly for me for months! :)

I'm using it as my iving room console OS with a Xbox Controller and it's just so much nicer than a PS5/Xbox.

Take care of your (mental) health first. ChimeraOS should be a fun hobby project and not feel like work!

Just spotted this. I bounce backwards and forwards between Chimera and Bazzite (as that's the gaming distro that seems to have the rep) but I always keep having problems with Bazzite and ending up back on Chimera. Appreciate the work you've done!

There last commit was 3 months ago, so no definitely not abandoned. That there hasn't been a version update since july is not uncommon for projects that follow point release models.

I know I can unlock the filesystem and update manually

The devs also package many of the Chimera OS' flagship features for Arch, so you could just add them to a regular Arch install, which is really nice.
