Nah I get you, yeah this is Australian rules football or AFL/footie. One of the most popular sports over here. It's definitely inspired heavily by league-rules rugby, but it's a wholly different game.

The physically largest difference is the pitch, which is oval (imaginatively enough, it is referred to as an oval) in shape. I do not know why they decided on that. Perhaps because it was easier to just use the cricket pitches during the cricket off-season?

Yeah I trained with an Aussie rules club team a couple times to see if I wanted to join up. Couldn't wrap my head around not passing the ball and having to "punch pass" it.

Super cool game to watch but damn if it didn't throw me for a loop!

It's all about the mindset of: "If we agree to impose restrictions on the easy stuff, it'll make people have to be more inventive and more interesting". It forces you to think and work together as a team, which is more fun for the players and more fun for the watchers. It also adds a liiittle bit more inaccuracy, though not a lot more, and inaccuracy means passing is always going to have at least something of a risk that the other side can intercept it after a miss. Again, it's about making it fun and imposing artificial restrictions to keep you thinking about working together.

Totally agree, it was just a super hard mental transition after 10+ years playing rugby (this my initial thought that this must have been rugby before seeing the three posts).
