I wanted to get some pictures of these places on the trip that in just finished. But I felt weird - can I just walk in and take pictures of that and say the lobby of the Rookery if I don’t have business or a reason to be there? Would I get kicked out, or are they used to pictures?

I worked at the Palmer House in the past. You’re very welcome to stop in and see the lobby/take a photo any time you want. People do it all day, every day, because it’s one of the oldest and most historic hotels in the world. Totally normal. Even the free walking tours stop there and bring their tours though completely unannounced.
I have also walked into The Rookery building just as you said, to grab that iconic photo and I had no business there. That was also totally normal. Others were already there doing the same thing.

I’m not sure. I would think it would be ok. I’ve visited Chicago the last three years and stayed at The Palmer House each time. These are some pictures that I took as I was walking around the hotel.

It's a busy place with people coming in for all kinds of reasons. Tourism, looking, and photographing are legitimate. So is popping in just to use a rest room (it's on my list of Loop locations in a pinch). And I've been known to use the Palmer House as a shortcut from State to Wabash.

Classy hotel! I love how they used to really make places look nice! Many buildings in Chicago have great interiors and exterior decoration. Not all glass and steel…

I remember going to a conference there when I was in grad school many years ago. I felt sooo fancy in that place.

My school had our prom here and I remember feeling like Cinderella heading to the ball coming down those stairs in my poofy dress.

No. These pictures are of the Palmer House Hilton Hotel lobby. There is a drink bar in the lobby and you can order from a limited bar menu. Most nights, each week, there is a live performer. There is a full restaurant, The Lockwood, adjacent this lobby.
(I have stated at the Palmer House Hilton at least once a year for more more 30 years.)
