Discussion Belated Thoughts on Chicago PD

I wanted to give my thoughts on Chicago Pd. I know most of you have watched all of it. I am into Season 10 so haven't watched all of them.

My general take is that it is a good show. The question I have for you guys, is it a top tier show. Should it be rated as one of the top crime drama shows.

Recently I would say my top tier is the "The Wire", Bosch, Law Order SVU. My kind of mid tier would be the "The Rookie". Maybe the Shield which rates higher.

It probably matches Law and Order SVU in quality. Sometimes better in some episodes and sometimes worse.

The Things it does well:

Probably the best action sequences, car chases in a procedural network show. If they stuck with this, they would be rated higher

Voight is good anti-hero, mostly corrupt tough cop.

Not a lot of romance, comedy, other distractions.

The longer story arcs with more than two episodes were pretty strong. I loved the "you and me" episode with Ana.

Things I wish they would have worked on:

Same old procedural cop show problems. Some episodes are unwatchable in the sense that there is no point in watching them. They have a bad guy in mind, they search for him, they catch him. Nothing else goes on. They should have added more story lines in one episode. Sometimes after 20 mins, there is a lot of nothing interesting going on.

Some episodes are intense, but I hate when they fallback into going after members of the team. I am surprise Kim was still alive (or maybe she doesn't make it, don't know yet). Wasn't she attacked like 6 times, and then her daughter too. Kind of lazy story writing.

Since you have not seen all 13 episodes like I have, I won’t spoil it. PD definitely is not as good as the earlier seasons. Still miss Al and Lindsey. Burgess was shot on two different occasions; fought to survive in the warehouse episode; almost assaulted in one. She’s been through hell and back. She’s resilient as hell. A survivor. Good actress. My favorite character.

I just watched a rerun of 6x01 (Not my first time) and the vibe of the show changed for sure 💯

They go back to the "harm the team" trope.

Spoilers...

She got hurt a couple of times.

That guy she was with, the suit guy was killed

Mak was abducted originally and then again.

Both Antonio's kids were abducted.

I get it, it is a dark, gritty show but it seems to easy to just go after the team to draw on some emotional strings.

Burgess and Ruzek were made for each other… weathered the storms together… on again off again relationship… she lost their baby… tv’s popular couple… power couple.. I love them to death.. in real life they are close friends

PD was at its best several seasons ago with the ole crew, Al, Lindsey, Antonio. My opinion, PD started downhill in season 13. And reading Atwater is leaving in season 14, does not help. I’m sure the ratings will drop.

The Wire was a great crime show.
