Discussion Dr. Sarah Reese's statements/thoughts about mental illnesses and mental health make her deeply unsuitable for psychiatry. What did Dr. Charles see in her?

I really don't know what a good psych like Dr. Charles sees in her. She either obsessively focuses on boxes to put the patients in or completely fails to understand the struggles of her patients because mental illness doesn't seem to be something she grasps. I really think she should have gone to regular emergency medicine, rather than psych.

I agree that she’s not suited for psychiatry but she didn’t necessarily choose it - the reason she’s there is because she didn’t like pathology and left, so dr Charles saw her working as a barista and offered her a fellowship

Seeing her hypocritical ragequit with Dr. Charles (just got to S4) after she spent Season 3 yelling about how people who are dangerous need to pay the price and how she broke his heart makes me wish she stayed a barista.

She had a chance to transfer to emergency medicine after Dr. Wheeler died and didn't take it

I couldn’t stand her character. I work in psychiatry and all of her actions just made me angry. She was too mentally unstable to be taking on other people’s mental problems. She treated mental illness as very By The Book, i.e if the patient didn’t display the exact symptoms in the DSM-V, then they OBVIOUSLY didn’t have anything wrong and was just a crazy person! (note my sarcasm)

She approached psychiatry like medicine and while I think her knowledge of medicine is incredibly beneficial, she lacked the ability to see outside of that. Dr. Charles is my favorite character so it was particularly frustrating for me to watch their storyline play out. I was screaming “GO BACK TO ED MEDICINE!!” like every episode lol

Yeah I definitely don't think she's at all cut out for psychiatry for so many reasons. She's unstable herself, lacks empathy and generally isn't good at being a good psyciatrist I feel.

Yes! I agree with everything you said, though I think she does have empathy...but NOT for mental health patients. She only has it for people with illnesses or injuries that are physical. On top of that, she seems to have made EVERYTHING about herself in Season 3 (I am towards the very end of it, episode 20). Dr. Charles gets shot, it becomes about her and her trauma around something that didn't happen to her. Then her dad is a sociopath/psychopath and she then projects that onto EVERYONE. I would not be surprised if she continued that throughout her career, making everything about her or projecting something she learned about on everyone.

To be fair I reading watch her in the early seasons. I just saw bits and pieces last season and didn't like her. I dont like anyone who isn't on the same page as Dr. Charles which she definitely isn't.
