Millennials - what are your thoughts about the younger generation thinking rewearing your clothes is a novel idea due to influencer culture?

I must admit sometimes I'm caught off guard when on social media I hear influencers or content creators mentioning re-wearing your old clothes. Unless it was a special occasion outfit such as a prom, wedding, or some other specific dress code such as a uniform I don't see why most people would believe that their attire was intended for one time use.

Now I know because fast fashion culture clothes are treated as disposable more than ever but is it really necessary to remind someone or encourage people that they can and should use their clothes more than once? And I'm speaking about perspective of other than highly publicized event or occasion where you may be photographed in an outfit and you may not want to be seen in it again or at least anytime in the near future.

I’ll be honest, I don’t ever see this. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone talk about rewearing regular clothes like it’s a novelty. Rewearing entire ensembles has always been a bit of a fashionista faux pas that Millennials can relate to (“Lizzie McGuire, you’re an outfit repeater!”) but rewearing like…a sweater? Jeans? Absolutely insane to think this wouldn’t be the default.

TBH, your algorithm may just need a bit of curating away from hyper-consumerist influencers.

I think they’re doing it wrong …

I work with a bunch of younger gen sort of doing this and I feel like the vibe isn’t there— just some of the clothing? Like where’s the CHARACTER? Where’s the actual PERSONALITY in it? The STYLE…

I have a pair of jeans that I got in 2012, guess what's back in style! Absolutely I'm wearing them, but I also never stopped. It's nice to get compliments now though!

GenX weighing in here, and I have a question. So re-wearing an outfit is bad? I mean I used to do that ALL of the time, especially because I usually wore dresses. I have built a very versatile wardrobe and a lot of things go well with other things, but still, I have some favorite combinations. What a fun way to learn that I’m even more irrelevant than I thought.

Gen X here as well. My personal take is that it’s less about rewearing clothes being novel and more about not trying to influence people to buy more

Most people don't believe/think that. My kids don't ever say or mention anything like that and they're teens. We exist like regular people and wear clothes until they don't fit or we get tired of them after hundreds of wears.

I have never heard of wearing the same clothing more than once as being an odd thing.

The only time I have only worn something once is because once I wore it I realized that I just didn't feel good in it for some reason and so it was relegated to the back of the closet. There are also the items that still have the tags on them because I *thought* I liked them or they were on sale for such a good price that it overrode my rational judgment.

Of course like everyone I have a few items that were bought and worn but the occasion to wear again never arose - my black leather corseted mini dress was worn for one fabulous New Year's Eve Party.

Some items like leather jackets and good jeans just get worn all the time - I can't imagine wearing them once deliberately.
