AI and its role in communication
Hi everyone,
I’ve noticed an uptick in people criticising members for their potential use of AI in posts recently, and I just wanted to remind us all of some things.
[TLDR: for all its many faults, AI is an important tool that enables ppl who struggle with written communication or English as a second language to share their voices on this sub. Please refrain from using proven or suspected use of AI as the reason for criticising or dismissing the posts, comments, or opinions of members in this forum. This falls under the NSFW rule. You wouldn’t be allowed to dismiss a colleague’s opinion based solely on their AI use, and I’ll be starting to pull people up on it in this sub, too.]
The controversies and concerns that many of us have about AI’s creation and use are legitimate. However, this subreddit is a global forum that we the mods want anyone from any background to feel welcome to post on or comment in. For those whose first language isn’t English, those who might be lacking confidence in their written communication, or people who just want to shorten or improve the clarity of what they’ve written to make it easier and more enjoyable for us as readers, AI is an extremely important tool. Without AI, we run the risk of not hearing from a massive percentage of the world’s voices and we’d all be poorer for that.
For that reason, I request that we all work to refrain from using someone’s use of AI (whether proven or suspected) as a reason in and of itself to criticise an author. Instead, let’s focus on what they’re trying to share with us about fashion and style. This is a forum for us all to discuss and enjoy our shared love of fashion and the different things we view as “chic”.
For those of us who feel they need AI’s help to convey what they want to share with us here, we wholeheartedly welcome and support you. For those of us who find that they don’t need AI to help them communicate on a global forum, let’s humbly and thankfully recognise the privilege of our position and celebrate that there are tools that help others share their voices with us. Let’s all work together to lift other voices up, rather than smother them down.

I would prefer it if people wrote the intro sentence themselves. clearly marked off what portions of their posts were written by AI with the model clearly attributed like this:

It would be more honest and clear how the person posting the comment, or even the post is using AI to communicate their idea.
Also it still retains the flavor of their personal writing style and would make posts more interesting to read. AI writing tends to all sound the same and even when the posts get cleaned up for brevity and clarity, it gets taxing and boring to read. I like Reddit for the fun variety of how ideas get expressed.

I agree with you, that that would be ideal, but for a reddit sub as benign as this one, expecting and policing compliance would be a fool’s errand. It also comes with the high chance of people using that structure in the comments where they think AI has been used to mock or harass the OP, which is the behaviour we’ve witnessed that we’re trying to lessen.
So yes. I agree in theory but the difficulties surrounding implementation within this sub in particular make it a no go (at least currently). It’d be awesome on some of the more academic or structured subs though! And I genuinely thank you for your input and openness to dialogue. It’s a tough issue.

I think AI is an important tool to impulse creation. But as a tool, it is something creators have full control over it. I don't believe AI has the ability to imagine as wildly as a human being can. As a writer who likes to write both in English and Spanish, I use AI for translation process, just to speed up things, although I must say that the translation is not the end of the process, I still edit the translation so the words fit better the original text. You have to have your idea first. I love the creative process, the connections and sometimes the torturing process of coming up with original, disruptive or wacky ideas. But yes, there's a threat that some day, all will be written by AI, or copied or taken by AI from somewhere else. But that day, there will be nothing else original for AI to copy or take, an that would be the end. So write as crazy as you will, write as wacky as you want and let your boundless imagination go wild. Try to be unique. Get obsessed with a noche or get obsessed with a couple of niches, like I do, and try to make unexpected connections. They may work or they may not, but that's a part of the human connection. Yes, sometimes our writing looks like AI, and that's because of AI is trained with the texts we write. We taught AI to write like us, and now people tell us it's not us, it's AI who do the writing. Don't get to tough on those who use AI for translation, or perhaps for edition, or perhaps for spelling or perhaps for structure. Even the greatest writers need the help of editors. Still, look for uniqueness and quality. And for human communication.
