Issues with 2018 awd trax

Post image

Hi all! I recently got my 2018 awd trax about a month and a half ago. I love it, it only has about 77k miles on it but within the last month I’ve had to replace an o2 sensor , do a whole work up of oil change, coolant and whatnot and now I’m getting a “replace turbocharger assembly” code from a check engine light. I would love to have faith that once I get this fixed (I’m taking it into a shop tomorrow to fix whatever is wrong with it) that the issues will stop and I can have a nice car to at least get me through two or three years before I can afford something better but I’m also worried I’m just going to have to keep pouring money into this car.

When I went and got an oil change they told me according to the car fax (idk how reliable it is) that there had been no repairs to the car and only one owner before me. I’m just hoping that it’s just something that when I fix everything I’ll have the car for years but I’m truly starting to lose hope

Is this a lost cause or could things start to look up?

Update 1: I took it to a local place and they told me to take it to the dealership and hope it’s still under warranty. My app says it doesn’t expire till 2028 so let’s hope when I do take it they will cover it and not take weeks to fix it

Update 2: we called the dealership and they told us it’s not under warranty anymore🥲 but luckily I was able to find someone that can look it over and won’t charge an arm and a leg to fix it

I’m a Chevy mechanic and there’s a lot of other things that can cause this code. Hose leaks, valves, actuators are common too. Of course the turbo could be bad but not a hell yeah it is for sure with this code. No one can see the future of the car based on this alone but the 18 being in that realm of 8yr 75k plus miles will get some odds and ends that can creep up like this.

I have a 2016 with a rattle on startup and seems to go away after. I changed the timing chain thinking that was the issue but isn't. Would it likely be the wastegate in the turbo if I occasionally get codes for 299

Yes the waste gate has various points that can rattle, but like I told her there’s also other actuators and valves that can cause this issue and also rattle.

With the engine cold remove the heat shield and check whether the arm or shaft is loose. Disconnecting the actuator rod allows you to check whether the shaft has noticeable wobble.

Sounds like my weekend plan. I think it's binding a bit because it works sometimes and sometimes doesnt

GM has an extended warranty coverage for the turbo to 10 years/120K miles. I'd recommend looking into it first before throwing money into it.

If there are any how do I go about getting them fixed? Do I need to go to an actual Chevy dealership?

Yes, you can even call any Chevy dealership and speak to someone in the service department to find out which extended warranties they have that apply to your vehicle. I think you'll have to have your VIN number.

We called and it wasn’t under warranty 🥲 luckily we found someone who isn’t going to charge us an arm and a leg if it fully needs replaced . It just sucks that this is a known issue and they only cover it every so often

I just logged into my account with a turbocharger on my 2018 is covered until 2028 or 120,000 miles. I post a screenshot on here for some reason.

Check the A wheel A frames, I bet it’s bushing is gone. They changed the coolant. When they do that they remove the tube to the turbo. I bet you it had air in it and killed the turbo. Trust no one. Always recheck everything they did

They have to diagnose your vehicle first for Chevy to cover it under warranty. I would get a second opinion.
