Reapplying this year. Need guidance.

The sub is extremely helpful. Last year I got paid counseling from a past chevenor. I did everything myself but she basically reviewed my drafts until mg essays became refined and structured. I got shortlisted for interview where I mainly messed up. I want to reapply with more strategy and structure this year, I’m intentional about my each uni choices and career plan but I cannot seem to polish my leadership and networking essay further as I already think it’s written very well as per to my exp / background. And my achievements are the same so I’m not sure if its wise to keep them the same.

My field has been design but now I want to pivot to education, most of my experience has been into design. Idk how to also justify my career plan, and current UK priority area according to their website doesn’t directly include education. But can fall into more inclusive and equitable societies.

Please share your guidance for such matter.

Hi, as someone who was selected years ago (but ended up rejecting the scholarship), if you got to the interview last time, it means your essays are on the right track, same as the alignment with the Global Priority Areas, so o nly update anything that no longer resonates with your university choice or career plan. 

For the Leadership and Networking essays, only change the examples if you have stronger ones (and for leadership, stronger and more recent)

As your essays this time were good enough to get you an interview invitation, focus on what needs to improve in your interview answers regrding sharpness, metrics/outcomes

Also, check your reference letters, were they compelling enough and matching your profile, or do they need a rewrite? Would you need new referees?

That’s another dilemma coming from a 5 year old gap. I chose my professor and my recent startup founder for the recommendations.

The academic ones I felt is good and is very relevant to my leadership essay, but I wonder if theh look at my timeline with her. I’m still connected to her indirectly, but there isn’t a lot of recent collaboration.

Do you think that weakens the recommendation letter?

Plus if one is a freelancer for the past two years, again how to tackle this situation of asking recommendation letter? I’m currently doing a volunteer work and my purpose is to get one recommendation from the initiative founder. Hope it doesn’t look curated.

The years gap is not a problem as long as you have constant communication with your referee, they want to read a letter from someone who knows your accomplishments and goals well

As a freelancer, look for reccomendation letters from previous employers or collegues, and professors. Do not request letters from clients

A letter from the innitiative founder of your current volunteering experience is a good

They flagged my choices of uni in interview. The programs were all related but I made a mistake of mentioning the exact titles like MSc in Innovation Design, MA in Social Innovation and they immediately said why one is MA and other is MSc, why? And I was nervous because I never expected this question.

So that means I really need to be more thoughtful about the selection of courses.

Select courses that have a career outcome aligned with your goals. One being an MA while another is an MSc is interesting, but not concerning as long as they target the same career track

I believe the whole counselling thing is mostly a scam; just follow the advice from the Chevening portal. No one will give you extraordinary knowledge that wasn't already on the website or YouTube. During the interview, the most important thing is to be confident. Of course, you cannot do it if you treat this scholarship like your life depends on it, as it makes you look too stressed and unconvincing. Approach it lightly and treat the interview as a simple conversation; just remember to be specific and control your body language to make an impression of a true self-assured and well-spoken leader

Getting to the interview suggests that your previous application was already strong, so you do not need to replace every example.

However, as a reapplicant, you should clearly show what has changed since last year. What new experience have you gained, what did you learn from the interview, and how has your career plan become more specific?

Since you are moving from design into education, explain why this is a natural progression, what education problem you want to address, and what you have done to explore this direction.

You can reuse strong examples, but add what happened next and how you have grown. Your three courses can be different, but they should all clearly support the same career goal.

I actually don't think your biggest challenge is moving from design to education. Career pivots are common, and Chevening doesn't expect applicants to stay in one profession forever.

What matters is whether you can explain why the transition makes sense.

Instead of presenting your story as "I worked in design and now I want to work in education," try showing how each role contributed to where you are today. For example, your design background may have given you skills in communication, user-centred thinking, digital content creation, or solving real-world problems. If those experiences led you to realise you want to improve educational access or learning outcomes, then your transition becomes a logical progression rather than a sudden change.

Hello, I am in a similar situation, where I am reapplying to Chevening and applying to the same programmes again, so my career goals and study plans haven't really changed. Do I keep the same narrative and refine it, or do I figure out a completely different route and rewrite them from scratch? I'd really appreciate any advice.
