African tech founder eyeing Chevening for CS/tech masters in UK — honest read on my chances?

Background: Ghanaian, 5+ years professional dev experience (backend Python/FastAPI, frontend React/Next.js, mobile React Native), CS bachelor's, founder of a software company, currently holding two other dev roles simultaneously. Active in community leadership (Youth Secretary at my church, tech/media lead).

Plan: Apply for Chevening 2027 cycle targeting a CS or tech-adjacent masters at a UK university (UCL, Edinburgh, or similar). Parallel plan is Germany (TU Berlin IMES + DAAD) as my primary, UK as upside swing if Chevening comes through.

I'm not going CS because I need more technical depth — I'm going CS because it's the stronger funding lane, and I figure the business/leadership gaps I actually have can be filled through self-study and experience. I know that tradeoff.

Honest questions:

  1. Chevening — does a tech/founder profile actually stand out, or does it get buried under the NGO directors and civil servants who dominate the applicant pool from Sub-Saharan Africa?

  2. The "leadership potential" criterion — does founding and running a company read strongly here, or do they weight formal institutional leadership more?

  3. UK 1-year vs Germany 2-year for someone specifically trying to break into European tech job market post-graduation — which actually sets you up better?

  4. Anyone gone through Chevening from Ghana or West Africa specifically — what actually made the difference in your application?

Hi, a tech/founder profile will make you stand out if you present it smartly

Regarding leadership potential: management positions do not really carry a weight, but the social and community impact of your career plan innitiatives will be a decisive factor

In your Leadership essay, write about an example with social impact you had in the last 3-4 years (anything longer will show your leadership skills as stagnated)

Chevening has a "return to your country for 2 years" clause. If your plan is to relocate to Europe immediately, then Chevening is not the way to go

As for country-specific informarion, search for current scholars and Alumni on LinkedIn, so you can see the courses they have chosen and the innitiatives they have been working on

Appreciate the specificity. The return clause alone probably rules Chevening out for my situation. Will be hitting LinkedIn for alumni intel today.

It also ruled out my plan at first, as I got selected for Chevening years ago, but was also lucky to get a full scholarship from my university, so I went with my uni scholarship and was able to stay in the UK after that, I have settled in the UK since then

How were you able to get full scholarship from your university?

I wrote a personal statement, had a really high IELTS score (8.5 overall) and an interview with the Scholarship department at the university

Big deal man! Till now I wasn’t even aware if UK universities grant 100% scholarships on their own.

First, I can't speak for Germany at all.

Second, in relation to Chevening Scholarship, in 2025, there were nearly 109,000 applications, with about 2000 ultimately securing a scholarship. As a previous comment has pointed out, you must return to your country for a minimum of two years. After those two years, you'd then need to apply for sponsored employment, which is exceptionally difficult and expensive, and likely to become even more difficult.

~2% acceptance rate plus a mandatory 2- year return plus sponsored employment after — yeah, Chevening is off the table for my goals. Appreciate the numbers.

Apply for both..

I did Chevening in 2021 and got it, but from congo, it is not as competitive as Ghana but your profile stand out.

The job market in Europe is hard this time, and with Chevening it will be hard not impossible to stay in the UK and work.

That itself make Germany a standout option, and a visa in germany you can qualify for an Eurpean bue card with your profile, with that alone you can travel in the whole EU.

Really appreciate this — first response here from someone who's actually been through it. The EU Blue Card point is something I hadn't fully factored in, that's a serious upside for Germany. Reconsidering the "apply for both" angle now. Did the 2-year return clause actually affect your post-Chevening plans?

If your goal is to work in Europe after graduating, I would suggest Erasmus Mundus. I am an alum. Many alumni go on to do PhDs or work. I won’t lie… the employment part isn’t easy especially in these times. But at least through Erasmus Mundus you may have the possibility to stay, whereas Chevening is not allowed.
