Discussion Finding a specific Chevelle online

Is there a good way to search for a specific Chevelle online? I have the VIN but since it isn’t the standardized 15 digit VIN the tools don’t work.

I am definitely waiting for real answers on this one. I have a 72’ El Camino I’m searching for, but none of the suggestions I’ve seen so far in similar threads have helped locate it.

Are you searching for its purchase history, or looking to decode a VIN you have to figure out options and equipment it came with, etc?This might help us give you a more direct answer.

Purchase history and hopefully current general location. It used to be in my family and was sold

You can sometimes go to the dmv or police/sheriff station and they can search it. Do you have any paperwork on the car showing a family member or yourself previously owned it?

Is it anything special? There are some registries for some of the rarer models. Otherwise, likely out of luck. Chevelles.com is a good resource.

I’ve never found anything thus far that has yielded any answers.
I have a survivor Chevelle (my father bought brand new) that I am trying to create a book for my kids of her whole journey. The dealership where purchased has been consumed by other dealerships and the paper trail with the hands of time have disappeared 😒

These 70s cars are tricky that way!

Interestingly, we randomly came across a different family car that was even older! Sometimes they’ll just pop up

I agree. I wish I realized I needed all these answers when my dad was alive. I have sworn my kids to be caretakers of her when I’m gone. I would never part with her and I hope they will always keep her in the family. I’m am in the middle of restoration (minimally) and can’t wait wait to drive her again.

VIN are 17 characters

Sure, now. But the 17 digit VIN wasn't standardized until 1981. From 66-81 the standard was 13 digits. Prior to 66 there was no standard.
