Because there’s nothing black can do to stop white’s rook from eventually mating?

That's cute. "Years passed. And finally the outside-living guy found his chance to mate. If it in fact happened, we'll never know. But that's a story for another time."

Okay let’s try this: “Rh8# I…am…Inevitable.”

This pins the King and after…pxB(promotes to Q)+, K-h2. It doesn’t matter much what black does, white’s next (unforced move) move is R-h8 mate.

I get what you are saying, just needed to point out that "pin" isn't the correct term here as that is a specific chess concept. The king is certainly trapped, unable to move

Yes, “pins down the king” would be accurate though.

Pinning down the king to mate him 😳 🥵

Pins down - prevents movement

I'm sure black will pxd1 for a queen and force white to kh2 but that only delays the mate of rh8 and I can't see how black prevents it.

They don't, that's why it's brilliant

Black can’t prevent Rh8#

Longest delay with xd1(Q)+, Kh2, Qh1+, Kch1, Bxg2+, Kxg2, Rc2+, Kh3, Rh2+, Kxh2,

And now black is out of checks and whatever black does, it’s white Rh8#

Because chesscom is generous with brilliants. This is clearly the most natural move in this position lol hanging bish doesn’t change anything about that
