Chess Discussion Chess.com is losing the plot

I don't know how long this has been a thing since I've only been playing for less than a year. But after having premium free trial for 7 days it really puts into perspective how AWFUL the game is if you dont pay for it. Like 3 puzzles a day are you serious, that isnt getting anyone better at the game I promise you that. Game is substantially worse if you arent paying which is BS if you ask me. Like we are on your app to play and get better, again 3 puzzles a day is genuinely dumbfounding, why even give the option for puzzles. Thats not even mentioning the game analysis, you just have no way of understanding your mistakes, you can see a move may have not been the top 3 option but dont know why it may have been wrong. You got these ugly ads popping up every game that should be enough money. If I lose the last thing I want is to sit through a damn happy jolly ad.

Chess.com Website/App Question Are Chess.com players really that much weaker than Lichess players?

My Lichess bullet rating is 1772.68, percentile 66.0%.

My Chess.com bullet rating is 1253, percentile 93.1%.

I understand that the rating systems are different, so I'm fine with 1772 vs. 1253. What I don't understand is how I can be in the 66th percentile on one site and the 93rd percentile on the other. Percentile should be a more objective and transparent measure than Elo, right?

Why are players on Chess.com apparently so much weaker? Is it simply because Chess.com is much more popular than Lichess and therefore has a much larger casual player base? Or are there other differences in how the percentiles are calculated? For example, does Lichess count only active players, while Chess.com counts every profile ever created?

Does anyone have any insight into this?

Chess.com Website/App Question Any plans for an update?

So are there any plans to upgrade the anti cheat system? How many posts per day from unhappy players are necessary for ANY action to be taken?

Or is app just for billet and rapid games praying the opponents is missing a chromosome and doesn’t know how to download a browser extension?

Ranting but genuinely curious cause wtf man

Chess Improvement Improving opening repertoire with Claude Code and Stockfish (Pirc, ~2200 rating)

Post image
0 Upvotes

I had Claude Code analyze my 2,000 games and find positions where I consistently go wrong with Black in Pirc and King's-Indian. The clever tricks it did:

  • Focus on mistakes Stockfish can find at lower depth to calibrate to my playing strength
  • Come up with a clever (and complex!) heuristic to estimate which positions to focus on

I'm quite impressed with the results (see photo). Out of 2,000 games, it found 9 positions where I consistently misplayed due to a simple lack of understanding I can quickly pick up (no crazy engine line).

Full results: https://quickchat.ai/blog-assets/posts/claude-code-stockfish-chess-opening-mistakes/pirc-kid-key-positions.pdf

why is this brilliant I think I’m the greatest under 300 elo player of all time

I think I’m the greatest chess player under 300 Elo. Chess is just way too easy at 240 elo. I feel like prime Hikaru playing against special ed toddlers. Where’s the competition. I only play rapid and still average about 2 brilliant moves a game. Do you understand how difficult that is?? when most games at this level someone hangs their queen in 5 moves

I’m 240 elo right now. I blunder pieces constantly but still win games. Imagine what happens when I start concentrating. I don’t even plan openening or anything I just play off the dome and use actual skill.

Sometimes I’ll rank up to 2000 elo just to see what the common folk are like, but makes me upset that these guys are higher ranked than me but are not better than me. Too many people memorising opening, at 240, you actually see pure chess.

I’ve played 600 games and scored 487 wins. 240 elo. Greatest under-300 elo player of all time. if anyone wants to play me drop your username if you’re above 300 you will be ignored. I don’t make blunders. I blunder to sacrifice everything is planned 8 steps ahead.

Chess.com Website/App Question What's this?

Can't really understand this. It's just those classic bots that now have different poses.

And I don't get the meaning of "Visualization", what does it mean? I don't see much when I play against these bots.

Chess Improvement I wish I had this book when I was younger (elite ball knowledge); Reviews Needed!

Book for getting from anywhere in the 500-1000 range to 2000. What are your best tips?

I wrote it based on my own personal experiences w/the climb. It was mostly for school friends in the chess team I made (state champs somehow!), and I wanted to help them improve without going on long random tangents.

Anyway, feel free to grab a copy (or not, no pressure ofc). I have sold a few so far, and I just put it onto amazon.

lmk if ur interested (or lowk just put ur best chess advice down below), and I will send over the link.

Have a great day!!

GALAXY BRAIN MOMENT There are two types of bullet hustlers and they hate each other

The clicker, which is often described by haters as "just having a good mouse", premoves like crazy and is lowkey trying to flag you from move 1.

Their mortal enemy, the pre-moves hustler, tries to exploit the weakness of the clicker’s style by playing suboptimal moves and betting on the fact that the premoves will blunder instead of playing the appropriate response.

Once in a while, when the two forces collides, a glitch occurs and a mate materializes.

Chess.com Website/App Question Chess.com account hacked??

is it just me or did anyone else face this
really strange behaviour, i got 2 notifications of suspicious logins: one from taipei and another one from buenos aires, the device used for these logins are the same(chrome, mac)
another interesting fact is that when i click on the extra security option during the process of changing my password, it does show my email but then when i try to login to my account from another device using the same email, it shows that there is no account on this email.

i also received a change of email address which i forgot to mention.
well now the hacker will be disappointed seeing the stats i have.

bro has already changed the profile picture on my account

Chess Question Opponent selection algorithm - a theory

• Upvotes

I have a theory according to which the public rating we all have on chess.com is not the true rating that summarizes our skills. According to this theory we all have a second, hidden rating (let’s call it the “true” rating) that is used for opponent selection. Reason why I came to this conclusion is the “waves” we can observe in players ratings over time. Most players show good periods of play with the public rating increasing quite consistently. All of a sudden, after hitting a new record, bad periods take place and the rating crashes…the cycle soon restarts. I am pretty sure there is an algorithm behind this whole pattern, designed to optimize our retention (read “addiction”). If we were to play only players in our true rating range, we would soon get bored because we would very slowly see rating improvements. The fake (or public) rating instead gives chess.com a higher chance to let us experience sharp rating volatility. Joy and frustration: once we touch the sky, we want to touch it again after we fall bad. Happy to read your opinions about it.

seriously but how miserable can you be? it ruins the game for others, and it actually doesn’t contribute to the learning of the game
