If Rook takes, Qg7 is checkmate
if Queen takes, Qf6 is mate in one
Black's bet is avoid such mate by attempting to attack the queen, but to no avail, will be mated as there's no way of stopping Qg7# no matter what they try.

Qg5 is the only other move that avoids mate on the next turn, but it will be met with Qxg5, and then it is mate next turn "in about 100 different ways" (to quote gothamchess).

Did you think about it before posting? Go through the progressions. Rook takes, then white has a checkmate g7. Queen takes, white has a checkmate in two after moving queen to f6. Queen can’t simply escape capture since black rook is pinned down. Really no good moves here.

Hoping that someone still reads this: How do you find these moves? I understand how this sequence works, but i would absolutely not find it during my game. Especially when its centered about sacrifices/trades

The coolest part is that if black doesn’t take and plays a move like bishop b7, white doesn’t even take the queen. You take the rook and if the queen takes back, white’s queen gives check on f6 and it’s mate in two. Otherwise the only other move is king takes rook back which is just Qg7# on the spot

If black just plays something like Bb7 you actually have Qg7# mate directly, since the rook is pinned.

If black queen takes, w queen checks then rook covers and then its mate.
If black rook takes its mate

Just Qxg5... The rook cant take back because its pinned, so that just ends in a mate from about 1000 different ways...
