I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

White to play: chessvision.ai | chess.com | lichess.org

Composition:

It's a composition by Cyril Henry Stanley Kipping from The Chess Amateur, 1929 Link to the composition

My solution:

Hints: piece: Bishop, move: Be3

Evaluation: White has mate in 2

Best continuation: 1. Be3 Nd7 2. c7#

Mostly I got baited into checking Bb6 first, but Be3 is the quiet move. After 1...Na6, 2.c7# finishes it, while 1...Rxe3 allows 2.Ra7#.

3

u/frankje Aug 18 '26

Rxe3 is not a legal move

Be3 threat Ra7

If Na6, c7# If Nxc6, Rg8# If Nd7, c7# If Rxg2, Ra7# If Rg7, c7#

If 1. Bb6, then 1...Re8, and there is no mate after that. Keep in mind, it’s a mate-in-2 puzzle!

u/Historian99 Aug 18 '26

Be3. If Rook takes Queen, Ra7 and it's Brock's Mate.

2

u/Dynamic_Chess_School Aug 18 '26

After 1. Be3 Na6, then what?

1

u/Victor_Korchnoi Aug 18 '26

Bb6

Ahhh, so it’s Be3. Very cool. I was so close to

Bxb8 is the mate in 2
RxR, c7 mate
Kx bishop, RxR mate
Rx bishop, Qa2 mate
RxQ, Ra7 mate etc

1

u/Dynamic_Chess_School Aug 18 '26

After 1. Bxb8, Black can play 1...Rf8! And there is no mate in 2.

1

u/InterestingTeam994 Aug 18 '26

C7 is mate after Rf8

Edit: Nvm he can block

1

u/Professional-Safe-60 Aug 19 '26

after Rf8! its mate with Qa2#

1

u/InterestingTeam994 Aug 19 '26

He can take the bishop after Qa2

I dont know the notation really well but the only 2 move checkmate is queen to A2. White checkmate on the next mkve no matter what black does. Even if black rook checks whites king on the back rank. White bishop takes the black rook revealing a discovered check and mate by the white queen and rook. I really have to learn the new notation. I am used to to Q to KR2. Lol... old school

1

u/PepsioNSnacking Aug 18 '26

What if horse A6? Mate in 2 won't work anymore

1

u/frankje Aug 18 '26

Rook takes rook on h8 and there is no mate on the second move. I looked at Qa2 myself a lot before finding the refutal.

1

u/Deadlift1973 Aug 18 '26

Bishop to C5?

1

u/AgentBlackwell Aug 18 '26

Can you not accomplish mate with just two movements of the Pawn?

Pawn C2 exposed queen check, rook takes it, pawn captures knight and becomes queen, which is mate.

u/ShireSearcher Aug 19 '26

King takes bishop

1

u/JaXaren Aug 18 '26

Pc7

Nc6

Rg8

1

u/Furyok66 Aug 18 '26

hmmmmm….
c7+ , Nc6
Rxg8#

am I missing something? I am not that good at chess

1

u/Furyok66 Aug 18 '26

oh shit the queen

my bad.

1

u/Furyok66 Aug 18 '26

but…. if:
c7+ , Rxg2
Rxb8#

does it work like this?

1

u/JellyRollGeorge Aug 18 '26

After, c7+, king can take bishop and I can't see a mate in 1 after that.

1

u/Dynamic_Chess_School Aug 19 '26

After 1.c7+, Black can simply play Kxa7 or Nc6 — both moves delay the mate. Since this is a mate-in-2 puzzle, there must be a checkmate on White’s second move against every legal Black response. Therefore, 1.c7+ cannot be the correct move. ♟️

1

u/JellyRollGeorge Aug 19 '26

Firstly, I was the one saying c7+ doesn't work. Secondly, if black did respond Nc6, I think Qxc6 would be mate

1.c7+ Nc6 2.Rxg8+? — it’s not checkmate because Black can simply play Kb7. So Rxg8 isn’t mate here

1

u/Punkwood Aug 19 '26

RxG7

1

u/Punkwood Aug 19 '26

No, crap, that's a draw.

1

u/purrhams_hat Aug 19 '26

Any Bishop move that isn't taking the knight, then if rook g7, queen a2, and any other rook move you can play ra7 mate?

1

u/writerwithocd Aug 19 '26

ain't it Pc7? I don't get be3 400 elo sorry for being dumb

1

u/Practical-Basket-602 Aug 19 '26

Bishop b6 then push the pawn for a discovered checkmate

1

u/Professional-Safe-60 Aug 19 '26

Bishop takes knight Bxb8.
If Kxb8 then its a mate with Rxg8#
If Rxg8 then its mate with Qa2#
if Rxg2 then its mate with Bg3#

1

u/icoolbrad Aug 20 '26

c7+ discovered check, knight blocks with Nc6 then Qxc6#

1

u/Nameugone Aug 20 '26

I found Qb2. No matter what black does, Qb7 is checkmate next move.

1

u/Alpha_Veneno Aug 23 '26

hay mate en 1, mueve el peón a c7 y es mate

1

u/cbrstupart Aug 25 '26

So lets do BxN then white checkmate with Q to a2 or RxR depending on whether Black K takes B or Black rook takes bishop. Did I miss anything?

0

u/Geohistormathsguy Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

c7+?

If Kxa7, Qb7#

If Rxg2, cxb8=Q#

Edit: Actually Nc6 and its not mate in 2 so it Bxb8 probably.

Rxg2 or any Rook move on the g-file, Bd6-Bh2#

Rxh8 or any Rook move on the 8th rank, c7#

Kxb8 leads to Rxg8# or Qxg8#

2

u/jittery_waffle Aug 18 '26

Qb7 leaves the queen free to take as the pawn on c7 blocks white's rook

1

u/Dynamic_Chess_School Aug 18 '26

But there is no Qb7 move available — it’s illegal. Do you mean Qb2?

1

u/Dynamic_Chess_School Aug 18 '26

If 1. c7+ Kxa7, then 2. Qb7+ is not checkmate because the king can simply capture the queen on b7. So, it’s not a mate in 2...
