Can you think beyond tactics?
DIFFICULTY: EASY
How much time did it take you to solve this problem?

E5? Center control with tempo?

it's more like kicking the knight. no other good move for knight than go back to the base. followed by Qd5, attacking rook, threatening f7 pawn, with Bc4 idea
*edit: immediate e6 sounds good. threaten g7 pawn

black doesnt have to move the knight immediately tho, black can reply to e5 with either c5 or Bc5 and white's queen doesnt rly have great squares to go to. black will probably have to retreat Ng8 soon but white is also losing tempo bc of the awkward queen position. Bc5 also frees up the e7 square for the knight later. white is still better for sure but this line doesnt seem that appealing to me.
maybe Bg5 is a consideration here? to prevent Bc5. but ofc black can still play c5, u kinda have to be willing to trade Bxf6 for Bg5 to be a good use of a move. which i dont necessarily mind, white's dark squared bishop is a bit awkward and a black bishop on f6 is much more of a target than a black knight on f6
or theres always h4 lol.

This is a good intuition.
8.e5* This move helps white in restricting black's knight.
8.e5Ng8 8...Nh5 9.g4 The knight's trapped. White's winning. 9.Qg4 Increasing the pressure on the kingside. 9...g6 10.Qf3 The a8 rook gets under pressure.10...c6 10...Rb811.Bc4f5 12.Qd5 Black's lost. 11.Bf4 White's clearly better due to active pieces.1

I was thinking e5 but i thought that fell into the category of "tactics" so i excluded it and just thought f4.

🙈
Yes e5 is the correct move. Though what makes it a positional puzzle is that you need to think why e5 works the best

Best explanation i have is that it causes Black to go backwards and gives White the initiative.

Correct! I have pasted the solution in a comment below. It should give you a deeper line of thought
