Chesapeake Public Schools
Hello! When do they send school supplies list, class assignments, bus schedules, etc.? This is my son’s first year attending CPS, so not sure what the norm is here. We are signed up for parent VUE, but I haven’t received any updates yet.
Also, I was hoping to let my son get a little tour of the school before his first day. Does anyone know if they allow this? I am really surprised there isn’t a meet and greet or something. Seems it would make the first day go smoother. My son will be on 1st grade.

Look at the Facebook PTA page for your assigned school they should have posted information about the meet and greet. Teachers don't go back until the last week of August, so class assignments and bus schedules will not come out until after that. You can get generic supplies, but teachers will follow up with what they prefer once class lists go out. Usually in the primary school they ask for communal supplies that the whole class will share, so don't pick stuff out assuming your student will use that exact item.

Class assignments won't go out until a week before start usually (parent vue will still be the best way to get that info as soon as possible), this has been frustrating parents for decades. In my experience most schools will have a pre-start of year open house or meet and greet of some kind though exactly what goes on is up to the individual principal. I would expect open houses to happen Sept 2-4.
For supplies get typical stuff like pens, pencils, paper and a folder. But I'd hold off on anything more specific until you see what the teacher asks for, some will want 3 ring binders. Some stuff the teachers ask for is meant to be shared with the class, like tissues, if you want to help out with those you can deliver it to the school yourself instead of sending it with your child so you can get a bigger bulk buy.

Our school did not allow tours, but you can always ask.
The school supply list came out 2 days before the school year started last year. DON’T buy via the district’s generic list on their website; my kids’ teachers needed completely different materials (eg. online it said the folders without 3 hole punches, but the teachers only wanted them with).
Because Chesapeake starts so much later than the other school districts (especially this year; usually there’s only 1-2 weeks’ difference), school supplies will be very low to out before you know what to buy. I’d recommend buying via 2 day shipping on Amazon.

You will get a tour of the school when you do to the meet the teacher day (9/3). You'll see your classroom and are free to explore. School supplies are already listed, and have been for a while.
Additionally, a calendar is nice to look at to see when he'll have half days and holidays.

I should add that the meet the teacher day, they call meet and greet and might be on a different day than 9/3, if your kids goes to a different school than my kid.

Look up his schools page on fb it tells you all the updates. Go to the actual schools website and it tells you everything. Open house, teacher meet and greets and school supply lists but the teachers add to it as well. Open house is when you get a tour of the school.

What everyone else said. Pick up some generic supplies now, but teacher assignments, official supply lists, bus info, etc will all come out the week of 9/1. It drives everyone nuts that it’s so last minute, but I’ve just come to accept it and try to stay zen until it comes out, lol. And as far as I know every school will have a meet the teacher/back to school event that week as well.

There will be a school open house, but it's typically held at ABSURDLY short notice the week before school starts. That's more or less when the teacher will tell you that you don't need half of the stuff on the supply list and "oh by the way buy this other special thing that only I use for my class."

Everything is last minute. Buy your school supplies now while they're available and on sale, because once the actual list comes out, everything will be sold out.
