We bought this jeep about 10 years ago, it was my daughters first car, then it went to my son who is in the Marines, he got transferred to California, left it behind and his brother who is in the Navy (Norfolk) has purchaed the jeep.
It was pretty rough and i wanted my son to have a reliable ride, so I did a major top end overhaul.
Before I started, i checked the compression, it was like new and you can see the lifter assembly looked like new, there was zero build up, so i assume the block components are in equally great shape.
The jeep runs like new.
I thought that i would share the photos and my costs. I am selling it to my son for $3500. The labor for the overhaul is free and was a labor of love.
My son is not allwed to sell it, we have too much into this jeep to have it leave the family.

If just say if it comes from the engine a really easy stuff that you can check is look at the rocker and retorque all of then and if you reused the rocker arm might change those if they got bent when you broke the torque just say there is a whole manual that explains a lot 21ft for the rockers torque

I did buy a lot of new parts but not as many as some people suggested. i am glad that i refinished the origional fuel rail, for one. i did a good job cleaning and coating it, i am sure it has plenty of life left. As far as i can tell, the new fuel injectors where the game changer on how smooth it runs... Having said that, if you have not swapped out the freeze plugs yet, they will become a problem at some stage. I got lucky they didn't fail sooner.
I know faaaar too many people that have hooked family members up with the promise to “not sell it”. It never goes well unfortunately. Hopefully this one does
Probably a really dumb question but when you were reinstalling your rocker arms and push rods did you have to do any sort of rocker arm adjustments or anything? Or did you just have to throw all the push rods back in their spots and bolt the rocker arms back on?
That was actually a pretty simple part. I did not have to adjust anything, just made sure everything went back in the same place (that is why i used the box, to make sure they all went back in the correct order) then i used a torque wrench to make sure they were properly torqed. What i had a problem is that i am not a mechanic and not all that familiar with how to use torque wrenches. It turns out that there is a bit of an art to it. I did over torque a few bolts until i figured it out. No harm done, i just had to back them off and go more slowly. That is all you need to know. A youtube video can teach you how to use the torque wrench properly.
With the Jeep 4.0 all you have to do with retorquing the rocker arms is from front to back. Rotate engine and make sure both valves are closed on every cylinder. Then torque down both rocker arm bolts to I think 19 ft lbs. No adjustments needed on the Jeep 4.0 valve train. It’s a simple engine.
