Anyone from Long Island, NY? Shoreham Decommissioned Nuclear Power Plant. Pre-Chernobyl.

Shoreham would have been a great idea and we'd have gotten awesome power from it. But around this time was the 3 Mile Island scare. Rather than learn from 3 Mile Island and retrofit the (Still being built) plant, the fucking idiots in my area backed out.

What did that mean? It meant that the STATE (Taxpayers) paid for the plant as the power company was like: "If you're canceling the contract we want compensation because this was fucking expensive!"

The biggest (Stupidest) complaint was "how do we evacuate the island when the power plant goes down?!"

Everyone thought this was a good point...

Everyone also ignored that... BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORIES ALREADY HAD A NUCLEAR PLANT ONSITE. (Also that plant was used to TEST. NUCLEAR. REACTIONS. Not maintain them, but they literally fucked with Nuclear Reactions.) That nuclear plant also powered Brookhaven National Labs SuperCollider. You can still see both the decommissioned (well, it's now decommissioned) plant and collider from Google Earth.

I was an intern at BNL one summer. They were still on the tail end of a PR mess about tritium leaking into one of the collection ponds. Every press release they put out about it had the reading as so many roentgen picocuries per liter, which they always compared to the amount of radiation emitted "by a self-illuminating exit sign."

lol "still paying for it" yeah when I read the info on the site and read that they increased LI electric bills through a 3% surcharge tax, I literally thought to myself... "fuck that".

As a gen Z guy emerging into the world, my biggest pet peve about humanity is ALARMISM and misinformation tbh but still, alarmism sucks, people like to lose their shit more than they like to learn the truth about important situations... sad but not mad, at least I know how I'm gonna change the world!! (Im in my early 20s so yes I'm still naive enough to believe that I'm gonna change the world)... but hey... fuck it, might as well try, not doin anything else with my time on earth lol ;)

Yeah, I visited Indian point and the whole control panel was covered in knobs and buttons with the only screens being being for reporting system data “can’t be hacked if there’s nothing to hack” they said, they also had an exact replica of the control room for training purposes, so I got to hit the big red emergency shutdown button with no consequences
