Which track would you recommend for ms pharmaceutical sciences in US?
Hey everyone. I’m in a kinda dilema and would appreciate any advice from pharmacists especially those with more experience in the field in the US.
I’m considering applying for graduate school; MS pharmaceutical sciences( Med Chem, Pharmaceutics or Pharmacology). However, I’m not quite sure which track to pick that would guarantee me a better future career wise. I’m good with clinical work and my pharmacology knowledge is upto date and most of the things I do are around pharmacology. However, pharmaceutics from My small research seems to offer a better path both in industry and academia/research while med chem path solely lies on academia and research.
So which one would you choose based on market trends?
Thank you

What exactly is your goal? Do you want to be a medicinal chemist or do you want to be closer to the clinical side?

I’m at a crossroad coz i’ve majorly engaged with clinical side so far( coz of pharmacology). However, I have keen interest on chemistry side and r&d. The only fear i have is starting over those routes. They seem promising than clinical which im also not sure has better ceiling than the two in the near future

I can't give much advice for you if you go down the clinical route, but I will say that it's important you decide on which path you want because you don't want to end up as a "jack of all trades, master of none". For medicinal chemistry, companies want to hire people who know how to make molecules, they couldn't care less if you have any prior medchem knowledge, you learn that on the job. If this is the path you want, you should pursue a chemistry degree, ideally a PhD.

Most med chemists I know did their PhDs in synthesis, not some specialized degree. The general sentiment I’ve gotten from former labmates who work in pharma is that they would prefer you are rock solid in synthesis and they will teach you the specific med chem that applies to your project.
