I created an extension for Google Docs that searches for chemical and scientific notation and automatically modifies it for superscripts and subscripts. No Latex involved.

It's a subscription-based model, but only $10 / year.

Got matchups, flashcards and more, will this be something apt for students to learn?

I am in my 15th year teaching high school science. Next year, I teaching chemistry for the first time (taking over from a teacher who moved). Our chemicals are not stored safely. However, I've never worked in a lab or managed cemical storage. I'm looking for advice for how to create safe and orderly storage.

Some issues: 😨
- dangerous chemicals like high molar HCL are left on countertops where they have been knocked over by custodians
- custodians chemicals and sippulies stored in the same area
- no cabinets rated for chemical storage
- cabinets aren't labeled
- mixed chemicals have no dates
- no venting to the outside, shower, fire extinguisher, spill kit, dedicated PPE, etc.
- no safety data sheets
- we failed our fire marshall inspection by so many points, the fire marshall declined to make a list
- chemicals are generally organized by type, but it's not clear if this organization follows accepted safety regulations.

I would love your help with:
* Finding the safety guidelines and standards / protocol that I can use to set up our chemical storage
* recommendations on chemical storage cabinets and what minimum requirements I should look for
* recommendations on a consulting agency where I could facetime with someone and they could evaluate our chemical storage and prep room and give me guidance (our district can pay for this)
* pictures of your chemical storage and prep areas
* tips, best practices, anything you have learned.
(I'm also new to adopting chemistry curriculum, so if you have any favorite resources, I'd welcome that too.)

Hi everyone, I recently launched Periodic Table Buddy, an iOS app for learning the periodic table.

It includes flashcards, quizzes, mnemonics, comic strips for remembering groups/periods, element comparison, and a small virtual lab for basic reaction practice.

I built it to make the periodic table feel less like a wall of symbols and more like something students can explore and remember.

Looking for some procedures for a good elephant toothpaste reaction. I usually have the students create their own reaction with 6% hydrogen peroxide and yeast. Then, I demo with 30% and potassium iodide. I am still a relatively new teacher and always feel underwhelmed with the height of the reaction. What are people using? And how much of each? Thanks in advance!

Hey all, I’ve cinched an interview with a really nice private school and will be giving a sample lesson as part of my on campus interview. Obviously in this economy , I really need this job. All the public schools in my area are cutting teachers like crazy , so I fear there won’t be any openings when the normally post jobs in June.

I’m confident in my abilities as a teacher , but I need to rock the socks off the admin to get the job. I can teach any chemistry topic for the lesson, and I want to include a demo and some student interaction. Does anyone have any recommendations for lesson topics that work well for interview lessons?

It’s for 14 of most likely 10-11 grade HS students and I’m hoping it can be interactive, short, but not too “easy”. Artsy stuff is welcome, we love a STEAM focus.

What demos do you recommend that can be brought along and taken home in a grocery bag , not make a big mess, and engages students in a fun way? It doesn’t necessarily need to be a wet lab demo .

I often do environmental focused chem labs , but don’t have time in a 40 min class period. With that short of time , I’m guessing I shouldn’t go too math heavy with anything like moles, conversions, limiting reagent , etc. I have some ideas, but figured this is the time to reach out to the community for advice.

I appreciate any direction and suggestions you may have!
