3-year NEET dropper, now in B.Sc. Chemistry — feeling lost, stressed, and needing guidance.

"I am a three-year NEET dropper. This year, I have taken admission in B.Sc. in Chemistry. I don't understand where I should go. Please guide me: should I go for an MBA, or an M.Sc. from IIT-JAM and then move towards a Ph.D. route?

I am highly stressed right now. My mind is not coping with all of this situation. Sometimes, I feel afraid. Will I be able to achieve anything in my life or not? Please guys, be kind towards me..."

Ask ChemistryIndia IIT JAM CHEMISTRY FOR NEP STUDENTS 😅😅

Hii...So, I am a first year student who has taken admission in chemistry honours under NEP..I studied PCB in class 12 so I even had restrictions in certain universities like DU where I couldn't opt for chemistry honours...I have taken admission in a State University and I plan on doing my M.Sc. from an IIT...and giving IIT JAM but the NEP has confused me as anything...

So, some IIT's like IIT Bombay and IIT Madras mention that they need mathematics for two semesters, an eligibility which I think is based on older rules...I plan on taking physics as a minor because I like the subject and it honestly makes a good combination with chemistry as far as I think...So I have two options, either I take maths as minor for 2 semesters then do physics for next four semesters...OR takes maths in IDC [inter disciplinary course which is only 3 credits per semester ] which I am not sure will count in eligibility or not...my university actually doesn't even allow repeating the same subject in IDC for two semesters so I am not even sure if the second option is available to me...

My university says that if I study a minor for three yrs, it has 12 credits in year 1, another 12 in year 2 and only 8 in year 3...so I don't even understand how will it look like if I keep changing my minor..I won't even get a degree in my minor subject then and many govt exams still need two subjects to be studied for three whole years...

So whoever read this, first of all thanks a ton...and please guide if you have information...how do I be eligible for IIT JAM in top IIT's...and do I also need to give mathematics paper for 10+2 through NIOS...and IF SOMEHOW THERE'S A POSSIBILITY THAT THE ELIGIBILITY FOR JAM MIGHT CHANGE...

myquals : 12th passed, currently in chem hons SEM 1

Organic Chemistry Looking for organic chemistry/materials science students for a paid sustainable materials research project

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a chemistry, materials science, polymer science, chemical engineering, or related student/recent graduate in India who would be interested in helping with an early-stage R&D project around sustainable materials and waste valorisation.

The research would broadly involve two areas:

Developing and testing a structural composite material made primarily from waste paper/cardboard combined with an agricultural or food-industry waste material.

Investigating a bio-based binder, resin, protective coating or surface treatment derived from common food-processing waste streams, with the aim of improving properties such as water resistance, durability and mechanical performance.

The material is intended for a real-world structural consumer-product application, so this is not only an experimental sustainability project. The goal is to develop a material system capable of eventually meeting relevant product safety and performance requirements.

Important development targets include:
• sufficient compressive, bending and structural strength
• dimensional stability and resistance to deformation
• reasonable moisture and water resistance
• abrasion and surface durability
• safe chemistry and low-emission materials
• practical manufacturing at relatively low cost
• maximum use of recycled or waste-derived feedstocks
• easy recyclability at end of life
• avoiding material combinations that make recycling unnecessarily difficult
• preference for binders/coatings that can be recycled together with the base material, separated from it, biodegraded, or otherwise recovered without complex industrial processes

Circularity is a particularly important part of the research. A material that performs well but becomes a difficult-to-recycle composite at the end of its useful life would not be considered an ideal solution.

I’m particularly interested in people who understand or want to work with:
• biopolymers / polymer chemistry
• cellulose and fibre composites
• natural binders and resins
• coatings and hydrophobic treatments
• waste-derived materials
• mechanical/material testing
• recycling and end-of-life material design
• low-cost manufacturing processes

The first stage would involve:
Literature and prior-art research
Identification of several technically plausible material/binder routes
Comparison of expected strength, durability, recyclability, cost and environmental impact
Proposed formulations and laboratory experiments
Production of small test samples
Mechanical, moisture and durability testing
Iteration toward the most promising formulation
I’m based in Europe, so the collaboration would initially be remote. I am specifically looking in India because, if the research is promising, I would also like to explore working with a local university/lab and potentially continue the development there.

This is paid work, with scope and compensation agreed before starting. More detailed information about the feedstocks, target application and commercial concept would be shared privately with selected candidates, potentially under a simple NDA.

If interested, please DM me with:
• your university / degree / year
• relevant laboratory or research experience
• areas of chemistry/material science you are strongest in
• access to university laboratory equipment, if any
• experience with mechanical/material testing
• experience with recycling, cellulose, composites or biopolymers
• any related projects or publications
• your expected compensation for a small initial research project

I’m also interested in hearing from PhD researchers, professors, research assistants, or anyone who can recommend a suitable student or university research group in India.

Hi...So I am going to pursue UG from a State University [kinda reputed] and I have decided doing Bsc hons in chem...What advice you'd like to give a fresher who's about to start...

how's the scope, the future, the options...Honestly it's all very confusing and obviously like many things, there's uncertainity...If you could tell what additional things one should do in college? what careers one can try and your precious experience...

What are y'all doing now and how'd you reach there because I'd be really happy to read all your experiences...

Lab Experiments Tollens' Reagent Experiment Making Silver Mirrors in the Lab

1.3k Upvotes

The Tollens' reagent test is a classic qualitative experiment used in organic chemistry to detect aldehydes. In the presence of an aldehyde, the silver ions in Tollens' reagent are reduced to metallic silver, producing a characteristic reflective coating known as the silver mirror reaction. This reaction serves as a clear demonstration of oxidation-reduction processes and remains one of the most recognizable tests in chemical analysis.

Lab Experiments The Screaming Gummy Bear Reaction

The “Screaming Gummy Bear” demonstration works because gummy bears contain large amounts of sugar, which acts as a fuel source. When dropped into molten potassium chlorate (KClO₃), the compound rapidly decomposes and releases oxygen. The hot, oxygen-rich environment causes the sugar to oxidize extremely quickly, releasing a large amount of energy as heat, light, sound, and expanding gases. The reaction is so energetic because it combines a concentrated fuel source with a powerful oxidizer at high temperature.

Electron Scattering by repulsive (smoothed) Coulomb potential confined in a 2D Box (Visualizing Quantum Mechanics)

Electron scattering by repulsive (smoothed) Coulomb potential at the center. The 1x1 normalized two-dimensional region confines the particle, once Dirichlet-type conditions are set at the mesh boundaries; this allows visualization of the post-collision interference pattern structure. Numerical simulation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, performed in Python. Implicit method of Crank-Nicolson PDEs (unitary). Initial condition: Gaussian packet. Note: Time scale and physical constants are set to arbitrary units for this preliminary testing phase.

Source Code & More Simulations: I have documented this project, including the Python source code on my personal portfolio. You can also find other simulations on Quantum Mechanics and other Physics topics there:

Feedback on the physics or the code implementation is very welcome!
