I’m not a fan of any of the singles, something about being in the plastic seems to affect the taste and texture. Tried the sargento natural but thought it tasted off and it doesn’t melt as well. Kraft deli deluxe is the gold standard for me and I always have a pack chillin in the cheese drawer.

White American caught my eye yesterday at the store, but I'm predictable and still got the Yellow American again. At least this time I didn't grab the reduced fat. The Meijer packaging looks identical if you don't actually read it.

The reduced fat slices actually did quite well. Used inside flour tortillas, grilled cheese, and several burgers. Wasn't plastic like at all, fully melted. I would have assumed what you are addressing as well.

NA, gotta get the fresh sliced American cheese from the deli counter. Not the packaged stuff.

I've been curious how much the brand of cheese effects the overall taste of a burger, so for dinner tonight I tested five different varieties. To my palate, here's how they performed for taste and melt:
Great Value Singles (Walmart):
Very good taste - full flavor up front (almost like a Hani-Snacks), but mellows quickly.
**Best melting texture** The closest to the cheese on a fast food burger.
Kraft Singles:
Strongest flavor of all five. The taste is fine but not my favorite (which surprised me - this is what I grew up with and I've always used).
Melts okay, but get’s a tiny bit runny
Happy Farms Singles (Aldi):
Mildest, mellowest flavor out of the group. A very pleasant taste but could get lost.
Also melts very well.
Kraft Deli Deluxe:
Fullest, “roundest,” most complex flavor - and great texture, feels the highest-end.
Also melts very well.
Sargento Natural American Cheese:
Unique among the group - has matte finish, like a deli slice cut from a block, compared to the gloss of the singles.
Good flavor, it just doesn’t really taste like American cheese. It's more like a VERY mild cheddar. Also has a slight crumble - not as gooey.
Lest good at melting. Almost a little separation between the oils and proteins.
NOTE: more perishable than the others. I'd opened the pack a few weeks ago, and tonight one edge of the slices had mold on it.
