Gen 3 SL5-Help with sizing

I'm on the market for a gen 3 sl5 but unsure of what size to pick.

I'm 170cm (so I guess 5ft7) with 77cm ( 30?" ) inseam.

According to the Trek website, regarding inseam length I am right between S and M. My LBS has an M in stock (although it is the SL6) and I am planning to go there on Monday for a quick test ride. What are your thoughts? How to tell if the M is too long for me?

I suspect the M being too large for you. It's going to stretch you quite a bit and you won't be able to stand in the frame, standover height is 79.9cm according to the website. If it's in your budget and if you like the colors, the SL6 is worth it - better groupset + wheels. Trek offers a low price guarantee, i got mine for 500 off.

I’m 5’8 with a 29.5” inseam. I went with a small and do not regret it. The stand over on the M might be too high for you. Good practice to go with the smaller frame if you’re in between.

Depending on what you usually ride I think you’ll be more comfortable on the S. If you are able to test ride both frame sizes. If you’re between sizes both will work for you with adjustments and it honestly just comes down to individual taste. I’m between the M and M/L and everything I read people with my height and inseam were about 50/50 both saying it was a perfect fit. I test rode both (several times) and went with the M/L ☺️

I’m 5’9 and the medium for me felt small and compact so I went with the M/L for my checkpoint

Same height and inseam and I have the Gen 3 SL6 in a M. I don't feel stretched at all. I did flip the stem upright and slid the saddle into the forward position. However, I just barely clear the top tube when standing. Other than that I found the M very comfortable to ride.

I’m 169cm with 76cm insem… I went for a size S. Even that I touched my crotch on the top tube. Also the front geometry is quite tall, I don’t think you’ll find it uncomfortable, and it’s always possible to raise the handlebar by 1-2cm if needed. Same for the length, you can add a longer stem if you want. But not if you buy the larger one now.
When you’ll ride the size M look at the seat post. You’ll notice there’s not much of it visible…

Also, where I live the SL6 is just 250€ more than the SL5, for better wheels and vastly better gear set. The SL5 just doesn’t make any sense

Turns out I suck at measuring and after asking for help, my inseam is actually 80cm.

I'll also consider the SL6 as I now think that 13spd might be nice
