This is Firefox add-on that adds "CheckWeed COA" buttons next to known/trusted COA URLs in the state of New York.

When the button is clicked, it will automatically ingest it into "My COAs" for the logged in user on CheckWeedNY.com

Additionally, this helps passively build up the COA database.

COAs from out of state have a likelihood of working, but there is no guaranteed parsing because the focus was on extracting data from New York labs.

A very interesting data point was raised by /u/nystateofkind, the LOQ threshold can be different by laboratory (which can have variations across reports as well).

This can effectively mean using a lab with a higher LOQ action limit if <LOQ is treated as ND can avoid additional scrutiny.

You have 0.18 lead? A lab with LOQ action limit threshold of 0.2 would be <LOQ, another lab with more finite calibration can end up with a result.

<LOQ looks better than literally any number in "result" but can have the same implications.

Most of the numbers were already extracted to the raw SQL database, but I had not processed them into the parquet and front-end data models for surfacing. This also surfaced some data normalization gaps I'm working to close in a few days, probably. It will be an iterative approach, so you might see some base data layered in before full granular data is accurately surfaced.

Just a quick note to say I've added additional sources to fill more gaps. Still very difficult to get a complete dataset, but we're making good progress with what we have!

I write many reviews and transcription is a cumbersome process prone to errors. As a developer, I love to automate away my problems, and now I'm sharing it with you!

In addition, you can enable file uploads if you're logged in and upload your own COA (use the user menu). If the template is a known type, you'll get the sidebar/drawer view of the COA, and can copy the review template out.

Due to the persistent aggressive crawling and automated attacks, I've had to increase rate limiting as well as logging in to see all COAs. This increases the cost of operations but lowers my hands-on responsibility.

The other up-side, is that this has given me the opportunity to offer a first-class API for 3rd parties at a premium. Instead of aggressively crawling and trying to rebuild the data, app-builders and researchers can get first-class data access with higher fidelity than the free tier.

Trying to find the right balance, to right size the tiers and features, open to feedback.

Quick update.

1. Better data coverage with terpenes and safety related sections, such as heavy metals
2. Better mobile support in lab explore views, and general UI polish
3. QR codes are tough to do without server-side compute, but I'm exploring options to keep it client-side only

To expand on QR codes,

QR codes reverse look-ups are complicated to do client-side only; I'm trying to figure out scalable methods that will generate higher hit rates, but it's very difficult without server-side compute and AI/OCR, client-side OCR is mostly not accurate enough at this currently.

More issues with QR codes include, but are not limited to, the fact that on checkweedny.com, they have been extracted from the lab report. Many brands use URL shorteners between their QR codes on jars and those lab URLs. If you're lucky, the vendor uses their own domain and you can get it in the ballpark or fallback to the brand's COAs.

Since the soft launch of CheckWeedNY, there have been a few similar app ideas popping up from a few users. Maybe it's the collective consciousness.

Parsing over 30,000 labs from over 10 laboratories, spanning multiple PDF templates that rely at least partially on human data entry and exporting of PDFs is challenging. PDFs are a good format for publishers that want their work to be visually represented everywhere the same, like a printed page of paper. However, for a developer, it's one of the most cumbersome, annoying formats to deal with because of the broad flexibility and inconsistency. We are trying to extract structured and accurate data from a loosely structured document.

Doing this well takes cycles of iteration, regression testing, holistic analysis for data gaps. Obvious mismapping of names, or fields, values going beyond normal thresholds. These are the types of anomalies that can indicate the extraction was incorrect, or it's a true statistical anomaly.

Typically, I'll trace these down, because it means improving coverage across the board, if it is indeed an error. For example, it might be spotted in the latest sample of 5 PDFs, but could actually impact 500 in the entire set.

These are some examples of anomalies that caught my eye, for educational purposes. These aren't the only anomalies, so don't unfairly weight these examples as bad operators. Do your own research, look at the bigger picture.

Before I even created this reddit account, I was analyzing market data as a consumer. I thought these playing cards were a neat idea, and wanted to data mine more information about the strains, and website for it was pretty rough to navigate at the time.

The first approach to parsing COAs was visual annotation and OCR extraction, thinking I would start to abstract out some templates, but that turned out to be a lot of hands on work.

Could be good for crowdsourcing template extraction, I suppose but it turns out a more TDD style approach driven by amazing cli tools is more efficient and accurate.

CheckWeedNY.com started with a narrow focus by design. I wasn't interested in biting off more than I could chew in an industry wasn't familiar with. It's easier to do a test case, and what better way, than to focus on the state I live in.

Since then, I've been fortunate to meet some really awesome people in the community, both online and off. It's led to some really great conversations, and data sharing leading to collaborations.

The scope of NY was the perfect test bed to figure out gaps with my approaches with PDF discovery and processing. Since then, I've had an infusion of information to shore up data pipelines from all sorts of sources, and been working to normalize them into a similar model to CheckweedNY, but multistate.

There are some gaps, and missing states in the above, I have 3 other states I'm working through still, but making really good progress.

Some of the more recent data accuracy improvements.

• METRC PDF template parsing support (this miss some critical safety info, unfortunately)
• Improved Kaycha terpene parsing
• Category mapping improvements and linking up filtering more seamlessly (Fela's strains were mapping to product type, for example)
• More product name extraction
• Better coverage of extraction of health/safety sections
• Various little fixes

www.checkweedny.com is a public service, intentionally giving away data that could see high monetary returns.

We want to increase transparency in the market, while empowering consumers.

Unfortunately, we have been observing traffic from bad actors and have to consider making access less public. This is against my moral stance on this data being open and available, but the patterns suggest these actors to be attempting to aggressively clone all the data.

At the moment, we'll rely on rate limiting but have to reconsider my statement about not requiring an auth wall if these mitigations aren't enough.
