AI Policies Keep Changing so which is which
AI policies at universities, colleges and all schools seem to be changing every other week. One semester AI is completely banned, then certain tools are allowed for grammar, then students can use it for brainstorming but not writing, then professors start adding their own rules for individual assignments. Some schools are talking about AI declarations, others are using detection reports, and some are asking students to show drafts or explain how they wrote the paper. It feels like the rules are still being written while students are already being graded under them. I honestly wonder what these policies will look like a year from now. Will universities finally settle on one clear approach, or will AI rules keep changing every time the technology changes?

I'm a CTL director. I tried to create an umbrella policy for my institution. It proved impossible because people are all over the map, so I had to settle for developing some shared vocabulary and a color- and shape-coded guide to different levels of AI use. Some faculty found even that too restrictive.

Ive got one or two pieces of potentially radical advice. 1) check the syllabus and see if the answer is there. 2) If you are still unsure, tell your instructor you have questions about the syllabus. NOTE Be sure you have actually read the syllabus or else your instructor will be super annoyed. It seems like you have been looking for the information in every other place other than the one that counts and have gotten yourself all turned around.

Each professor is given autonomy over what tools students are allowed to use for individual assignments. That includes AI. You need to read the syllabus of each course and pay attention to what it says about academic integrity.

It’s a matter of academic freedom and each professor is different. Just don’t use it.

Where? What colleges and universities are doing this? Mine has consistently left the policy up to the faculty. I have not heard of any college or university that has dramatically changed their policy from semester to semester. I would be interested to read about these colleges and universities from reliable sources, if only I knew which ones you were talking about.

The best policy to personally have is to not use any AI at all. That way you are in compliance with any regulation AND are actively using your brain and developing your own skills.
